Getting your foot on the career ladder can be difficult. That’s where having the right support can make all the difference.

Angus lives with a severe sight impairment and had spent four years trying to secure meaningful employment. Our East Lothian Works service could see Angus’ determination and potential. The tailored support they provided including paid work experience, interview preparation, workplace adjustments and ongoing guidance. Angus built the confidence, skills and experience and is now thriving in a Modern Apprenticeship with NHS. He’s planning his future with greater independence, career prospects and long-term aspirations.

“The support I received from East Lothian Works changed my life. They believed in me, helped me build my confidence and supported me every step of the way. I’m now in my first job and looking forward to the future,” explained Angus.

After successfully completing our two-week funded telecoms training course with CTTS and 12 weeks of paid work experience with GoFibre, Jamie secured a permanent role with the company. His journey is a great example of how determination, opportunity and the right support can lead to life-changing outcomes.

For Jamie, this achievement is about much more than employment. It provides the security of a regular income to support his family, and the confidence that comes from building a meaningful and sustainable career. With support from our East Lothian Works' Parental Employability Team every step of the way, and through his own commitment and perseverance, Jamie has reached new heights and taken an important step towards a bright and stable future.

East Lothian businesses - save the date! October is Business Month.

Following on from the success of last year's event, we have pulled together another packed programme of events designed to inspire, connect and support the local business community including networking opportunities, workshops, seminars and business support events aimed at businesses of all sizes and sectors.

Delivered by East Lothian Council, the programme will also highlight events delivered by strategic partners, celebrate local business success stories and help connect businesses with the support services that can help them grow and thrive.

One of the first major events in the programme will be Meet the Buyer South 2026, taking place at the Corn Exchange, Haddington, on Wednesday 7 October. Delivered by the Supplier Development Programme in partnership with East Lothian and Scottish Borders councils, the free event provides businesses with the opportunity to meet procurement teams and buyers from public and private sector organisations, explore future contract opportunities and find out how to become tender-ready.

The Edinburgh Innovation Hub (EIH) was officially opened today by by Parliamentary Under Secretary for Scotland, Melanie Ward and Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Tourism and Transport, Stephen Flynn.

The EIH is a £40 million joint venture between East Lothian Council and Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh (QMU) and will be a nationally significant centre for innovation-driven business growth, creating new high-value employment, and is the anchor project of the planned Edinburgh Innovation Park. It is part of the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal (ESESCRD) and is supported by £28.6 million from the UK Government, £1.4 million from the Scottish Government and £10 million from East Lothian Council.

It offers flexibility of space across a range of laboratories, offices and fully equipped meeting and conference spaces for rent by small to medium enterprises with a particular focus on life sciences, food and drink, tech, start-ups and allied companies and has received significant interest from potential tenants.

EIH welcomed its first tenant, Forge Minerals, in December 2025 followed by Aurora Avionics and Riverwood Ecology. Only this week a new tenant has just signed a lease and will be moving their Life Sciences business with approximately 40 employees into EIH.

You can still book for many other events including the History of Aberlady Bay during World War Two on Saturday 5 September - a 9km walk exploring wartime defences and wrecks.

Places are also filling up for Unnoticed History in Gullane; Steam Ploughing in East Lothian; North Berwick's Historic Harbour & Shoreline and North Berwick from Shore to Summit. For full details of all the events and how to book, go to https://orlo.uk/Ye9el

You still have two weeks left to share your views on proposed active travel improvements between Musselburgh’s Fisherrow Harbour and Links View.
We’re holding a public consultation seeking feedback on the proposals which form part of the Musselburgh Active Toun (MAT) project.
The MAT scheme aims to deliver safer and more accessible walking, wheeling and cycling connections.
The concept designs for the section between Fisherrow Harbour and Links View are focused on enhancing the functionality, accessibility and overall experience of this much-loved area.
Residents, businesses, visitors, harbour users, and those with an interest in Musselburgh’s waterfront and travel network are encouraged to offer their views.
Anyone wishing to take part in the consultation can visit the project website until Wednesday, 16 September to explore the designs and complete the online survey at https://orlo.uk/mMknN
