A major new research project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, will use the St Luke’s Hospital story as a defining example of how many of Britain’s workhouse infirmaries evolved, often haphazardly, into our modern day hospitals. Following the path of the Guildford Poor Law Infirmary through its many transitions, this fascinating story will be told through the testimonies of the inspectors, gua

rdians and inmates of the workhouse, right up to the recollections of people who worked, trained or were treated at St Luke’s until its closure in 1996.
