Remembering Private Arthur Winter Rowston on the 109th anniversary of his death.

Group photograph of a class at Clee (Humberstone) Foundation School, c1910.

The boy seated in the middle row, immediately to the right of the master, is Arthur Winter Rowston. He served with the 1st/5th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment and was killed in action near Loos on 8th September 1917.

Join us at Grimsby Town Hall on Friday 18th September and Saturday 19th September (10am – 4pm) for a free exhibition on the religious architecture of North East Lincolnshire. The exhibition will include photographs, documents and artefacts relating to the area’s monastic houses, Anglican churches, and nonconformist chapels. Some of the region’s lost churches and chapels will also feature, including Grimsby’s Baptist Tabernacle, St Stephen’s Church (Roberts Street), St Paul’s Church (West Marsh), and Trinity Methodist Church (Cleethorpes).

The exhibition will also tell the fascinating story of Grimsby’s synagogue, which first opened for worship in 1888. This part of the display will also shed light on the lives of Jewish people in the town, their service in both World Wars, and the businesses they established, which played an important part in Grimsby’s development from the late 19th century onwards
