Most people assume going directly to a carrier is the straightforward option. It's rarely the cheapest.

Convenient. Accessible. But postal rates for international parcels are typically among the highest available, particularly for heavier items. Tracking is often limited.

🗳Option 2: Carrier shop or website (DHL, FedEx, etc.)
More tracking. More reliability. But you're paying the full public rate — the same rate charged to anyone off the street with no account.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi have excellent carrier infrastructure. Express delivery from Europe typically takes 2–4 working days. Economy options run 5–9 working days.

Import duties:
The UAE applies a 5% import duty on most goods. For personal gifts and low-value imports, this is often not collected in practice - but it can be. Declare accurately regardless.

What to avoid sending:
- Alcohol (prohibited)
- Pork products
- Va**ng products and e-cigarettes
- Certain medications
- Anything that could be considered politically or religiously sensitive

For standard goods - clothing, electronics, gifts, personal items - the process is typically quick and smooth.

Declare specifically: 'Silver bracelet, €45' rather than 'jewellery'. Specificity speeds clearance.

What 'lost' actually means in shipping:
A parcel is typically classified as lost after a specific number of days without a tracking update — usually 15–30 days depending on the carrier and service.

What to do:
Step 1: Check the tracking. A gap in updates isn't the same as lost - it often just means the parcel is in transit between scan points.
Step 2: Contact Topparcel with your order number. We open an investigation with the carrier directly.
Step 3: If the parcel is confirmed lost, you file a claim under the insurance included with your shipment.

Many people think shipping costs depend only on weight.
They don’t.

Couriers also calculate something called volumetric weight - which means the size of your parcel can increase the price, even if it’s light. For example, a large but lightweight box can be charged as if it were much heavier.

If your parcel is bigger than declared, the courier may recalculate the cost after collection — and the final price will be higher.

A few extra centimetres can make a real difference in price.

Most customs delays are preventable. Here are the five most common causes.

1. Vague description on the declaration
'Miscellaneous items' or 'clothing' is not a description. Customs officers need to classify goods - give them what they need. 'Men's cotton T-shirt, €25' is correct. 'Clothes' is not.

2. Inaccurate declared value
Writing a lower value than the real one doesn't avoid duty - it flags the shipment for inspection and potentially confiscation. It also invalidates your insurance.

3. Prohibited or restricted items
Every country has a list. Food, aerosols, certain medications, liquids over specified volumes. Not knowing the rules doesn't exempt you from them.

4. Missing documentation for commercial shipments
Sending goods for business purposes? You'll typically need a commercial invoice. The declaration form alone isn't sufficient for commercial goods.

5. Declaration language issues
Customs declarations should be completed in English for most international destinations. Other languages may slow processing.
