Our story

Simply put - this page is intended to encourage an interest in local history and heritage, particularly sites in Thurrock, Essex, with the occasional mention of places elsewhere in UK or the rest of the world.

To share all sorts of information, from a random selection of Facebook Groups and Pages, to articles, blogs, excerpts, images and videos from a variety of sources covering all aspects of this fascinating topic. It also endeavours to alert page followers about any updates, campaigns/events involving historical sites/buildings within the area and the rest of the UK. The focus is on heritage sites listed on Thurrock Council’s website, but of course, as each moment, day, year, era of history unfolds, the smallest and most humble of environments will inevitably be affected in some way by what is happening in the wider world. Parishes The old ecclesiastical administrative divisions in the UK are now much less significant than they once were. Local authority boundaries often follow parish boundaries but sometimes ignore them, which means only part of a parish may fall within a particular borough. Local historians tend to use these old divisions for 2 reasons. Firstly, many of the documents they use as evidence arise from the parish-based system of local government, and secondly, the parish boundaries are generally a convenient way of dividing an area for field work and recording purposes.
