Introducing the recipients of the first grants from this year's Community Led Vision Fund. There are some intriguing projects in there!

From renovating a 16th century watermill in Perthshire to passing on greenkeeping skills and creating new employment in Strathspey, these grants are aimed at helping to build resilient communities in the Cairngorms National Park.

We’re excited to follow their progress throughout the next few months.

These are the wonderful colours of Grantown Museum’s latest exhibition – a project funded by our Communities and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Plaid nan Granndach will feature rare examples of 18th and 19th century tartan cloth from the museum’s own collection as well as some on loan from the Highland Folk Museum and from collections in America.

And with the help of historian Peter Macdonald, the museum will recreate an 18th century Strathspey plaid that was carried across the water with Duncan Grant, a shepherd from Duthil who emigrated to the USA in 1803. His family have looked after the remnants of plaid that he took with him for generations and now have given them to the museum.

Mr Macdonald will warp a floor loom in the museum on Saturday May 30, 11am-3pm, where it will be used to make a fresh version of the 18th century plaid.

This will be a fascinating look at Strathspey’s weaving heritage.

The exhibition, which runs until July 31, will also include a programme of spinning, dyeing and weaving workshops as well as walks and talks about the Strathspey textile industry.

One of the first events is on Thursday June 4, 7pm, when master kiltmaker Margaret Grant will be in conversation with Peter Macdonald, featuring tales of the history of tartan and the people who made it.

Did you know that our Community-Led Vision Fund has been running for more than five years and distributed more than £1.3million to projects in the Cairngorms? It’s a wonderful legacy of thriving communities through the area.

The fund is open for applications right now and we’re looking back at a few of our previous projects to show you what could be possible in your community. Today it’s a project at a much-loved attraction in Newtonmore.

The Highland Folk Museum brings traditional Highland history to life with a range of historic buildings in an open air setting. The team wanted to reinstate the curling pond on site as a freshwater habitat, as well as allowing curling in the winter if weather allowed. Storm damage had resulted in the loss of many pine trees but native species such as birch, rowan and hazel had grown back.

The museum applied to the CLV fund and used the money for a range of improvements to the pond. They included an electrical supply, water pipes and a borehole pump to assist in filling the pond. Oak from Logie Timber was used to create a sluice gate.

In partnership with the Highlife Highland Countryside Rangers, there were two successful sessions as part of the Cairngorms National Park’s junior ranger scheme, to survey the current area for plants and wildlife. They also built a bug hotel – as seen in one of our pictures.

And there was added excitement when one of the session featured on the BBC Landward programme in April 2024.

Your project could part of the CLV success story – just take a look at our website to find out more and contact our team for help with the application today!

Our board meets tomorrow in Grantown and one of the items on the agenda is the inital tranche of applications to the Community-Led Vision Fund. They will be discussing project carefully and deciding whether to give a grant.

This is just the first round of decisions - you still have lots of time to draw up your own application to the CLV Fund.

For our new followers, this has been one of our major success stories - distributing more than £1.3million to nearly 90 projects across the Cairngorms in the past five years.

That’s included providing support to a diverse range of ideas: from building renovations to education programmes, mending workshops to cycling equipment.
The Community Led Vision Fund plays a crucial role in enabling communities to shape and enhance the Cairngorms area. We are looking for projects that promote sustainable development, environmental conservation, and community well-being.

Our latest case study comes from Anagach Woods, a near 1000-acre forest owned by the community of Grantown since 2002. It has an expansive network of woodland trails: Scots pine, birch, juniper, and rowan sit amongst primeval peat-bogs, hidden lochans and ancient eskers. The woods also provide habitat for rare and endangered species such as the capercaillie, twinflower, and pine hoverfly.

Anagach Woods Trust sought a grant from Networks for Nature to assist its project to improve condition for priority species and biodiversity loss.

Their seven-point plan included activities to encourage broadleaf regeneration, create wildfire resistance and removing unnecessary fencing. The grant was used to purchase tools for use during their volunteer work sessions.

Over the course of the project, the Trust ran 24 volunteer days, amounting to an astonishing 984 hours of work. That includes removing more than 1,200m or wire fencing, creating 30 hollows in pine tree stumps for pine hoverfly larvae and making 19 new ponds by damming drainage ditches.

The work to regenerate habitats continues with monthly volunteer days.
AWT Secretary Ian Pratt said: “The Anagach Woods Trust is very grateful for the support of the Cairngorms Trust, Networks for Nature Fund. The funding that we have received has allowed us to buy tools and equipment which allow our volunteers to improve conditions in the woods for priority species and reduce biodiversity loss.”

At the start of the year we announced the lucky recipients of our Community and Cultural Heritage Fund and now we’re starting to see some of those projects come to fruition.

One of the grants went to Grantown Open Studios , which runs from May 1-4. This event is a showcase of creativity by 18 artists from across the Cairngorms National Park area. There are a number of venues, from garden workshops to high street galleries, and this year’s expanded programme include music concerts, drawing classes and a book launch.

The organisers are even laying on a bus to allow visitors to travel between artists’ studios. The service is free to use, bookable online and is being funded by the Cairngorms National Park.

Pictured are the 18 artists whose work you can see during your tour of studios in the Grantown area. Leaflets, including a map, are available across the area and you can visit the event website to find out more: www.grantownopenstudios.co.uk

Well done to the organisers and Discover Grantown – good luck for the weekend!
