๐ŸŒฒ A nature reserve that is ancient, wild, & immeasurably special ๐Ÿฆ…
Protecting and restoring habitats, saving species and helping end the nature and climate emergency in the Cairngorms National Park. The toilets are open during Nature Centre opening times. The Loch Garten Nature Centre sits in the heart of Abernethy's Caledonian pine forest, offering great wildlife viewing opportunities including o

spreys (if they're nesting), crested tits, woodpeckers, voles, crossbills, siskins and red squirrels. Staff are on hand to give illustrated talks about the forest and ospreys, and to help you make the most of your visit. The centre has new interpretation and there are activities for families on the walk up to the centre from the car park. You can also enjoy a coffee and snack here, while you sit outside and watch the birds and squirrels at the feeders. The centre is open seven days a week, from April 1 until the end of October. The last entry is at 4.30pm. **Please note, card payments only for entrance charges and refreshments.**

When the centre is closed, the woodland trails are always open. See notice boards in the car parks for details. The Loch Garten, Loch Mallachie and Garten Wood car parks are open all year round, as is the rest of the reserve and woodland trials. You are likely to see crested tits, red squirrels, great spotted woodpeckers and of course, the faithful coal tits. If you are here to feed the birds, please do not scatter seed or leave piles of it on the tables or wedged in trees etc - it encourages rats which scare off the small birds and squirrels, not to mention bring a health hazard with them, and we then have to control them. ACCESS INFORMATION
*No fires or BBQs are allowed on any part of Abernethy reserve under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
*Dogs on leads in forest and on the mountaintops during ground-nesting birds season (April 1 - August 31) and under close control at all other times.

RSPB Abernethy is a National Nature Reserve, not a campsite - please do not share or promote the location on social media.
*Drones are not permitted on the reserve without landowner consent.
*Paddle-boarders and kayakers - we are concerned about the impacts of these activities on the wildlife of Loch Garten. Please observe signage.

Ancient, wild & immeasurably special: that's Abernethy!๐ŸŒฒ

Historically, much of this forest was felled and replanted for timber production, leaving plantations.

But some remnants of the ancient forest were left, helping us to recreate habitat that's wild & free, like the forests of old.

Willow Walk 2026 ๐Ÿƒ

It's days like last Thursday that make us feel lucky to work here in the Cairngorms ๐Ÿ˜

Our team joined in with the annual Cairngorms Connect Willow Walk - an event when a horde of volunteers and conservationists march 1,000sof willow saplings up over the plateau to be planted in the Loch A'an basin.

These saplings are montane specialists - home grown in our Cairngorms Connect tree nursery on Abernethy to help rediversify the plateau landscape. And boy - what a beautiful day it was to do it!

Thanks go to funding from SSEN Distribution.

Happy World Peatland Day! ๐ŸŒพ

Here on Abernethy we have vast swathes of peatland across our forest and uplands. But why is it special?

Home to invertebrates, wading birds and bog specialist plants like Sphagnum mosses, it provides a unique habitat for our wildlife.

But much of it has degraded, emitting carbon and drying out. So we are committed to re-wetting and restoring this amazing landscape.

Goshawk chicks! ๐Ÿ˜

After diligently incubating for 37 days, in the early hours of this morning, our first two Goshawk eggs hatched! We first noticed a โ€˜pipโ€™ in one of the eggs at around 15:30 yesterday, so we were super excited to see the first chick appear early this morning.

Weโ€™ve had some amazing views of them on camera today, and the male has already been straight to work, bringing the first bit of prey to the nest at around midday. The female then carefully tore off tiny pieces to feed to the chicks.

There are still two eggs left to hatch on the nest, and weโ€™d expect them to hatch within the next 24 hours or so.

Over the next week, the female will continue to brood the chicks, as they arenโ€™t yet able to regulate their body temperature, while the male should continue bringing food back to the nest for the female to feed the young.

How exciting!

Osprey Update ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿฆ…

It's now been over 2 weeks since we last saw KL5. Given the length of time he's been away at such a crucial moment, we expect that he has unfortunately met his end. But without him being recovered reported, we will never know for sure.

So what happened to Myrtle?

She held on as best she could, incubating the eggs, but after 6 long days of no food she had to go fishing.

In the meantime, while she was away from the nest, new unringed male came in and started making himself at home, and when arranged the nest, kicked the final two eggs out.

Myrtle was away from the nest for around a week, and during that time, a couple of unringed males have been fighting for the nest, and most recently, a new, very pale male seems to have aserted himself as the dominant male on our nest.

Just as we started to wonder about Myrtle as well, and whether she had maybe found another nest or started to head south, last night she reappeared! Quickly wanting to make an impression, our new pale friend brought in two fish for her in around 30 minutes, and has continued in a similar vein today, bringing in another three fish.

So what will happen next?

Unfortunately, it is far too late for them to have a successful breeding season this year, but this is a really encouraging sign that another male has taken to the nest so quickly, and Myrtle is getting on board. Hopefully, for the remainder of this season, these two will hang around, strengthen their bond, and defend the nest from any intruders.

As always, never a dull moment, so make sure you stay tuned and find out what happens next!

๐ŸŒฒPine Pollen Storms๐ŸŒฒ

For those of you living around Strathspey, you may have wondered what that green dust is: covering everything, stratching at your throat and creating hazy clouds that sweep across the the landscape...

It's pine pollen!

The male pine cones (the bright orange cone) have released their pollen, sending it across our warm spring winds to be received by the female cones. Once fertilised, the female cones will harden and turn into the brown Scots Pine cones that we know so well.
