Over the past few days, soldiers and officers from across the Armoured Corps and Infantry have been racing against each other at the Combat Arms Sailing Regatta.

This wonderful event welcomes both the complete novice (never having been in a boat before) and those with decades of experience to share with them, promoting teamwork, leadership and friendly inter-unit competition.

Well done to for a well deserved first place!

We regret to inform you that has been forced to retire from the race after sustaining steering damage.

We made for sheltered waters off Swanage and made every effort to fix it, but with limited steering control and some water coming in around the bearing, unfortunately the damage is too great to repair at sea and it just wouldn’t be sensible to press on with the risk of it getting worse.

Everyone aboard is extremely disappointed but safe, and we’re returning home. Thank you to everyone who has supported us in this year’s campaign.

Alex ( ) is an in .

He’s a and has been sailing for most of his life, and as part of our team for the last three. On his first race with us, in 2021, he wore pink chinos and linen shirts throughout (under his waterproofs) which his wife had ironed for him.

We have no idea how she finds the time to look after this big kid as well as the two young ones they have together, and a full time career of her own!

Day 2 at 8am (19 hours in)

What a night! Shortly after our last update, one of our crew was hit really badly with seasickness so we put into Studland Bay to allow him to recover and to wait until the worst of the weather had passed. As you can see, the plan worked and we’re back underway this morning, beating towards Portland.

Our friends from put into Poole Harbour after nearly losing their headsail overboard, and joined us in Studland for the night. One of the RAF crew is our skipper from two years ago, following transfer and commissioning.

Unfortunately our friends from the were dismasted and forced to withdraw - absolutely gutted for them, but glad everyone’s safe and well.

Henry and have passed Salcombe in Devon. They’re a tough lot, and Henry’s so competitive we wouldn’t be surprised if he got everyone to cut part of their toothbrush handles off to save weight! Well done FBS!

Come on Henry!!

Our Rear Commodore is skipper of the (Army racing team) entry, and is nearing Portland just before the tide turns.

Amazing progress, and best of luck for the rest of the race.

Day 1 at 6pm (5 hours in)

The team have made their way down the Western Solent, out past Hurst Castle, across Christchurch Bay, and over the ledge into Poole Bay.

This is just the start of things, and they still have a long way to go. At this point, they’ll be pushing as hard as they possibly can because they want to make it past Portland before the tide turns at about 9pm and makes the going really tough!

Even if they don’t make it there before it turns, the further they can get before it does the better.

have entered a team in the 2023 .

The team is made up of serving Regular and Reserve personnel from across the Corps. Sailing provides an amazing opportunity to develop officers and soldiers who are prepared for the rigours of operations, but it’s also a lot of fun!

We’ll tell you a bit more about the team this week, and keep you informed of our progress.

myth or legend?

A crew of The Royal Wessex Yeomanry, Combat Recce - The Scottish & North Irish Yeomanry and The Royal Lancers represented the Royal Armoured Corps in the race over the weekend. This is a race along the south coast to the and back.

Two of the crew were first time racers (one had never been on a yacht before) but shortly after the start on Thursday was near the front of her class… until the spinnaker tore!

Offshore racing provides challenges like nothing else, and is a great opportunity to develop and skills. Despite the spinnaker setback, they continued to persevere and finished the race late on Saturday.

A successful week for The Royal Lancers on for the Army Offshore Regatta.

This competition is designed to be an introduction to racing for some and a chance to develop and for all. Still… nice to come away with a few prizes!

If you’re serving in the Army (Regular or Reserve), look out for next year’s AOR and get involved.
