A big thank you to Rachel Bunn and Christine Moore who organised a charity gala ball to raise funds for our Sandra Chapman Centre.
The two friends were inspired to organise the fund-raiser by their own lived experiences and those of their families – and wanted to give back to the Sandra Chapman Centre for the care and compassion they provide to people facing challenging times.
The charity ball exceeded all their expectations, raising more than £3,200.
Rachel and Christine would like to thank all the sponsors and local companies who donated their services and time to make the charity ball such a success.
The ball took place at the Wherry Hotel last month and included a three-course meal, music, entertainment and a magician.
Rachel and Christine are now planning to make the ball an annual event – great work, thank you!

The next meeting of our Robins group – a support group for anyone who has lost a loved one – will be held in the Louise Hamilton Centre, on our hospital site, on Monday, 15 June.
The group meets each month in the Centre, and offers a space for you to talk and remember a loved one.
The event, between 1pm and 2pm on Monday, is for anyone who has been bereaved who would like some support. It is organised by our Cancer Care Navigators but you do not have to have lost someone to cancer – anyone who has lost a close loved one is welcome. If you would like to, please come along and have a chat.

This week - Monday 8 to Sunday 14 June - is National Carers Week 2026 and on Wednesday Sue Francis and the team at the Louise Hamilton Centre hosted their annual strawberry cream tea event for carers who use services at the Centre.
Despite the rain, thunder and lightning there was a good turnout for the tea, although the weather meant this year it had to be an indoor event.
With a selection of treats, including cakes, scones and strawberries, the traditional cream tea was enjoyed by carer guests and some of our chaplaincy team who visited to provide support.
We’d like to say a big thank you to the team at the Central Co-Op who not only kindly donated items for the tea but also helped with serving it.
Thanks to the team and all those who attended, and to Morrisons at Bradwell who also donated some scones.
As Carers Week continues you can visit either, or both, of our stands currently in our main foyer and outside our hospital Chapel to pick up more information.

A telecommunications engineer who has kept James Paget staff in touch with each other - and the wider world - is ringing off after nearly three decades at our hospital.
Kevin Mason has become a familiar face in the hospital, visiting wards and departments across the site to maintain the telephony systems, which include thousands of extensions, handsets and miles of cables and wiring
But this week, he completed his final tasks before retiring after a career which started in the 1970s, working for the General Post Office (GPO).
Initially, Kevin was based in Ipswich but in 1978 moved to the GPO’s Great Yarmouth operation - and then later joining telecommunications specialists BJ Communications, also based in the town.
It was while working for the company in 1996 that Kevin first set foot in the James Paget, when the business was contracted to work on the hospital’s phone systems.
Then, two years later, Kevin joined the estates team at the Paget, where he has worked ever since.
“I have absolutely loved working at the Paget,” said Kevin. “You feel that you are not just working for the team at the hospital, but the wider community too, and that means you always want to give 100%”
During his time at the hospital, Kevin worked on a number of major telephone upgrades, including a switch to an entirely new system in 2020, involving 2200 extensions and 3500 phones.
He has overseen the installation of telephony systems in all the new buildings added to the hospital’s estate over the years, including most recently our new Community Diagnostic Centres and Orthopaedic Centre.
Kevin also played a key role in perhaps the most dramatic major incident to affect the hospital – the lightning strike of November 2014, which resulted in the temporary loss of more than 900 extensions.
“It really was a bolt from the blue!” said Kevin. “I can remember that I worked throughout the day and night, to help restore our lines. It was a real challenge and it took weeks to get the lines fully restored but great teamwork saw us through.”
Now the 68-year-old, who lives in Oulton Broad, is aiming for a quieter life as he heads into retirement.
“I’m looking forward to having a rest!” he said. “But then I have got plenty to do at home, and am planning to do some travelling too.”
“I will miss all the staff I have worked with over the years. We really are like a big family at the Paget – and the teams I have worked with, including estates and IT, have been brilliant,” he added.

Don’t forget to nominate staff for a Paget’s People award!
We’re still looking for nominations for our ‘Working Together’ and ‘Outstanding Leadership’ categories.

Collaboration is one of our core values, whether that be across departments or across organisations. Do you have an example of people working together to get you home? Maybe its several teams working together to deliver an important project? Whatever it is, we want to hear it.

Have you had an experience with a manger or service leader who’s gone above and beyond? Maybe you’ve seen how supportive they are of their staff, or maybe your manager has inspired and encouraged you to succeed. Whatever the case, we want to celebrate their outstanding leadership.

You can complete a nomination for the ‘Working Together’ or ‘Outstanding Leadership’ Award here: https://forms.office.com/e/FdQbipPc1r or collecting a paper form at our main hospital reception or Newberry Clinic.
