MEETING WITH THE MINISTER FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT

❇️ One of my first acts as the Leader of the new West Surrey Council was to officially request a meeting with the government to discuss a number of important issues that will impact the new area - most important of these is the subject of the inherited debt levels from Woking, Runnymede, Spelthorne and Surrey Coiunty council that will be our problem when the council comes into its full powers in April 2027.

✅ To my surprise, I have been invited to meet with the Minister for Local Government (Alison McGovern MP) at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government tomorrow in London.

*Hopefully*, that means the government intend to take this seriously and that this is a positive sign. That has happened within two weeks of my being elected Leader.

Wonderful to see Tom take on this role, supported by Mayoress Cllr Victoria Kiehl - Godalming Central & Ockford. His chosen charities Home-Start Waverley and ChoirBLAST are both brilliant causes close to the heart of our community.

NEW MAYOR FOR GODALMING - Congratulations to Councillor Tom Kiehl, who last night joined the long and distinguished history of the Mayoralty in Godalming which was established in 1835.
Councillor Kiehl formally accepted the role of Mayor of Godalming and will be supported throughout his Mayoral year by his wife, Mrs Victoria Kiehl, as Mayoress.
The mayor has chosen two local charities to support during his year in office: Home-Start Waverley and ChoirBLAST.
We wish the Mayor and Mayoress a successful and memorable year ahead in service to the community.

🤝 The first meeting of the West Surrey Shadow Authority will take place today (Thursday 21 May) at 2pm in Guildford.

🗣️ At the meeting, councillors are expected to appoint the Leader and executive cabinet members, agree key governance documents and formally begin the shadow authority period. Decisions about future council offices and headquarters will be made by councillors at a later stage.
