Have you visited Meanwhile in the Market yet?

Now open at Eastgate Shopping Centre, Meanwhile in the Market celebrates the people, stories and heritage of Eastgate Indoor Market through a collection of photographic portraits and historical displays.

Before heading up the escalator, visitors can explore the photo wall, which highlights the history of Eastgate Market and its place in Gloucester’s story over the generations. The main exhibition, located at the top of the escalator, showcases the people who make the market what it is today.

The project was initiated by GAS Projects and co-created with Sama Creatives and Eastgate Market traders. The exhibition acknowledges that the project was conceived when Viva O’Flynn, Mock Mayor of Barton and a passionate supporter of Eastgate Market, approached GAS Projects for support in raising the profile of the market. Conversations with traders about their pride in the market community and hopes and concerns for the future helped shape an idea that has become a powerful celebration of the people at the heart of Eastgate Market.

The launch also featured Stories from Eastgate, a short film by Christina Wheeler for Voices Gloucester, capturing the voices, memories and experiences that make the market such a special place.

As Gloucester looks ahead to the exciting Greyfriars Quarter redevelopment and the future relocation of the market, this exhibition provides a timely opportunity to celebrate Eastgate Market’s contribution to the city and the community that has grown around it.

The launch was attended by the Right Worshipful Mayor of Gloucester, Cllr Adrian Graham, the Sheriff and Deputy Mayor of Gloucester, Cllr Anne Radley, local councillors: Cllr Caroline Courtney and Cllr Valerie Simms, traders, project partners and members of the community.

If you’re in the city centre, take a moment to stop by and explore the exhibition. Learn more about the people, stories and heritage that have shaped Eastgate Market over generations. While you’re there, support Eastgate Indoor Market and the traders who continue to make it such an important part of Gloucester’s community.

Josie KO’s exhibition is also on display at the top of the escalator and in the Meanwhile Gallery. The gallery is open Wednesday and Thursday, 10am–3pm, and Friday and Saturday, 11am–4pm. A drop-in art activity takes place on Saturdays from 1pm–3pm.

These projects have been supported through funding from Arts Council England, Gloucester City Council, Gloucester Culture Trust, Together Gloucester, Eastgate Shopping Centre, University of Gloucestershire, and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF).

The World Cup is here, so we thought we'd take a look at how recycling is done in some of the host cities - first up: Mexico City

♻️ Mexico City introduced new recycling systems to its residents in January 2026.

🎵 Part of their campaign plan is that “Garbage trucks will play an informative song to remind citizens about proper separation and collection days.”🎵

How do we think this would go down in Gloucester? Polite answers only please!

A much-loved piece of Gloucester’s history is back where it belongs.

The Tailor of Gloucester Clock figurines, based on Beatrix Potter’s famous story set in Gloucester, have returned to Eastgate Market, bringing a familiar part of the city’s heritage back into public view.

Hosted by Gloucester Town Crier, Alan Myatt, the celebration marked the return of the figurines more than a decade after the clock was dismantled when it became unfixable.

Rather than being lost, the figurines found a new home with the Pied Piper Appeal, where they were cared for and shared with SEND schools across Gloucestershire, continuing to bring joy to children and families across the county.

“We are just so thrilled that we are going to see this back where it started,” said Julie Kent MBE, Chairwoman of Trustees of the Pied Piper Appeal.

The event also paid tribute to the late Nick Broady, former Chair and Chair of Trustees of the Pied Piper Appeal, whose passion for the figurines and dedication to the community played an important role in their preservation.

Sheriff and Deputy Mayor of Gloucester Cllr Anne Radley reflected on the figurines’ place in the city’s identity, saying: “When I moved to Gloucester as an outsider, the key things I learned about the city were the Cathedral and Beatrix Potter. It’s lovely that the figurines have been brought back here.”

The display has been enhanced by a specially commissioned backdrop created by Gloucester artist Russell Haines, helping to tell the story of the figurines and their place in the city’s heritage.

Reflecting on the project, Will James, Marketing and Commercialisation Manager at Eastgate Shopping Centre, said: “It’s important we never forget our roots.” He added: “We wanted to make something which is a bit more than a display.”

The return of the figurines is not just a celebration of Gloucester’s heritage, but of the people and organisations who worked together to ensure this cherished part of the city’s story could be enjoyed once again.

If you’re in the city centre, why not make a day of it? Visit the display, support local businesses and be part of welcoming this beloved piece of our heritage back to Gloucester.
