Gloucester Brass Band

Gloucester Brass Band The page of Gloucester Brass Band. Based in the heart of Gloucester city, we are a non contesting band with members of all ages and abilities!

Gloucester Brass was formed in 1992 from a small nucleus of experienced players joining with some enthusiastic learners of various ages. It has grown steadily, now numbering over 30 players, ranging from 13 to 80+ years of age. You are never too old to learn and enjoy this fascinating pastime! For twenty years the band was led by Roger Pearman, who succeeded in creating a real sense of commitment

and shared enjoyment in music-making amongst all band members, whatever their musical background. Roger decided to retire from the position of conductor and musical director in 2011, handing over the baton to Mark Knight, a long-standing member of the band with considerable conducting experience. The guiding principle of Gloucester Brass has always been to play music that is as enjoyable for audiences to listen to as it is for the band to play. We do not take part in brass band contests, but focus entirely on preparing for and giving public performances, which take place in a variety of venues, including churches, shopping centres, garden parties, flower shows, fetes and public parks. We have a wide repertoire, including music from musicals, film and TV themes, marches and arrangements of classical music. The band draws its members from within the city boundaries, with a few members travelling from the surrounding district. It is always on the lookout for new members, of any age and all levels of ability, including absolute beginners. Many of its players did not start playing brass instruments until their middle age (or beyond). In January 2017, the band decided to introduce a Beginners Band specifically designed for people who had never picked up a brass instrument in their lives. This group welcomes both children and adults who want to see if playing in a brass band is for them. We would be delighted to hear from anyone interested in playing for us, or joining the Training band, or arranging for us to play at an event. Please do not hesitate to contact us!

We have had fun this evening at our annual social event! We went to Greek on the Docks at Gloucester Quays and it was a great place to go ☺️ Delicious food was enjoyed, and trophies were distributed. This year, the Tony Blumer award went to Trevor, our Bb bass player, and our brand new trophy, created in honour of former musical director Roger Pearman, was for 'players player' voted for by the band, and it went to Mac, our percussionist! Well done Trevor and Mac! 👏👏👏

Here’s a video of our performance of Baggy Trousers at last nights concert. It’s a new piece for us this year but it’s one the band love playing!

What a fantastic concert we played this evening, together with our friends at Parkend Silver Band. The audience was treated to such delights as Baggy Trousers, Share My Yoke, Beyond the Sea, and the epic Oregon, along with many other pieces. Vital funds were raised for The Great Oaks Hospice and Parkinsons UK, and a great time was had by all. Thanks to our amazing leaders: Mark Knight and Louis Charles Thomas all who played, organised, or helped in any way, as well as our wonderful audience of course!

Last week we had the honour of participating in the funeral of our own Roger Pearman: our founder and former musical director. Roger sadly died a few weeks ago after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.

Happy new year everyone! We have one from the archives for you today - this was sometime in the late 1990s at Hillfield Gardens off London Road, Gloucester. We were playing at a Victorian themed event and so we wore Victorian outfits! Several pictured here still play with the band today, and others are sadly no longer here. Who remembers this event? 😁
