Towards the end of the Summer Term, the Rich’s community came together to celebrate the diversity, cultures and traditions that enrich everyday life within the School. Through wearing cultural dress and sharing stories and experiences, pupils and staff had the opportunity to learn from one another and recognise the value of different perspectives.

A particular highlight of the day was the leadership shown by our Year 12 (now Year 13) students, who played a key role in planning and delivering this celebration. Their commitment, organisation and enthusiasm helped create a meaningful experience for the whole School community!

Sadly, due to the heatwave and extreme temperatures at the time we had to cancel the food-based element of the celebrations, but Culture Day remained a powerful reminder that inclusion, respect and understanding are at the heart of who we are. By celebrating our differences, we strengthen our sense of belonging and foster a community where everyone feels valued.

A sincere thank you to everyone who contributed, shared their culture and supported our chosen charity, Lives of Colour. Your generosity and engagement made the day a great success.

Good luck to all our Year 13 students as they begin their Work Experience placements this week, and a huge thank you to all the employers and organisations making these opportunities possible!

It’s also a reminder of our school’s original purpose. When Sir Thomas Rich left money in his will in 1666 to establish a school for 20 poor boys from Gloucester, the aim was not only to educate them, but to prepare them for an apprenticeship when they left.

Over 350 years after Sir Thomas Rich’s act of generosity, that commitment to helping our students take their next steps into the world of work remains just as important.

If you’re a parent or alumnus who could support future work experience placements, mock interviews or other careers initiatives, we’d love to hear from you. Please contact Mrs Manning, Head of Careers, on [email protected].

Checking the School’s archives, a list of trades which pupils were apprenticed to between 1670 and 1882 includes Pinmaker (Gloucester had a thriving pin making industry, with the factory based in Westgate Street), Attorney, Accountant, Apothecary, Stonemason, Perukemaker and many more.

On the back of an incredible set of A Level results last week, we are delighted to be celebrating another brilliant day of GCSE success. An impressive 52% of all entries were awarded the top grades of 8 and 9, while 73% of grades achieved were at grade 7 or above, reflecting the remarkable achievements of our pupils.

Matthew Lynch, Headteacher at Sir Thomas Rich’s, said:

"Once again, these are an excellent set of GCSE results, and I am incredibly proud of all that our pupils have achieved. Their success is a testament to their hard work, resilience and personal commitment throughout their time at STRS.

These results also reflect the unwavering support of parents and the dedication of our teachers and support staff, for which I am enormously grateful.

Most importantly, our Year 11 pupils have secured results of which they should be immensely proud. On behalf of everyone at Sir Thomas Rich’s, I congratulate them on all that they have achieved and wish them every success as they continue their academic journey."

We are incredibly proud to announce that The Times has ranked Sir Thomas Rich’s as 18th amongst state schools for A Level results, and 35th overall! This is a phenomenal achievement and a wonderful reflection of the hard work, commitment and determination of our students, supported by our dedicated staff.

Huge congratulations to all our Year 13 students on their exceptional A Level results today. The year group achieved an outstanding 58.3% of grades at A* and A, representing a remarkable 10 percentage point increase on last year’s results.

Performance at the highest levels was equally impressive, with 89.4% of all grades awarded at A* to B and the most common grade being an A grade.

Headteacher, Matthew Lynch, said:

“I am absolutely delighted for our Year 13 students, who should be immensely proud of all they have achieved; it has been a pleasure working with them. These outstanding results are a testament to their hard work, determination, and resilience, as well as the invaluable teaching and support of our dedicated staff.

“Throughout their time at the School, our Year 13 students have embraced our core values of integrity, respect and perseverance, and today’s success reflects both their academic excellence and strength of character. As they embark on exciting new opportunities at university, apprenticeships and beyond, they leave us as proud Richians, and we look forward to hearing all about their future successes.

Huge congratulations to our U12, U13 and U15 cricket teams on winning their respective County Cup competitions. The U12s defeated The Crypt School by 72 runs, while the U13s beat Marling School by 9 wickets. The U15s also enjoyed a convincing victory, defeating Newent School by 91 runs to secure their County Cup title.

Congratulations also to our U15s, who reached the semi-finals of the Barclays Knights Stokes Cup at Headingley. Although they narrowly missed out on a place in the final at Lord's, they can be incredibly proud of their achievement after losing by just 42 runs to Altrincham Grammar School.

Finally, good luck to our U14s, who will play Cheltenham College in the County Cup Final in September. We wish them every success!

Towards the end of term we welcomed back Old Richians Josh and Jamie, who returned to speak to our Politics students about their journey since leaving Sir Thomas Rich’s.

After leaving in 2021, both went on to study Politics-related degrees and now work in different roles for Alex McIntyre, MP for Gloucester. They shared their experiences of university, working in politics and the wide range of career opportunities available in the sector.

We are very grateful to Josh and Jamie for giving their time to inspire our students and provide a valuable insight into careers in politics.
