Another weekly floral update from our Head Gardener, Alix. The rain has really helped to perk things up! Here we have Lynchnis chalcendonica, allium pupurescens and some lovely shots of flowers within the herbacous border and the rose borders. Our next open house and gardens has only a few spaces left and a week to go until bookings close. Do come along and see these beautiful blooms for yourself - we'd love to see you!

After a beautiful week of sunshine, we have had more blooms and colour hit the gardens. Here we have rugosa blanc double decker coubert, chives and nigella peeping out from the rose beds, aquilegia, lily leaves and ferns. Beautiful!

We still have a couple of spaces left on our upcoming garden tour next Weds, 10th June at 11.30am. Tickets are available via Eventbrtite below. Do come and join us for a gentle stroll in these stunning grounds, where you'll be accompanied by an experienced guide who'll tell you all about the Holford family history, the trees and plantings.

Having thoroughly enjoyed the Chelsea Flower Show and looking ahead to the RHS show at Badminton next month, we are reminded that the Holford family and in particular, Sir George, were somewhat experts in horticulture. Especially orchids. Whilst we no longer exhibit orchids, Sir George's Head Orchidist, George Alexander sent exhibits most years. Pictured below a Rosamund Orchid Westonbirt variety, shown at Chelsea in 1939 and a Vanda Coerulea Queen Elizabeth variety. Also pictured our only surviving Holford orchid here at Westonbirt. It's been a bit sad in recent years but since being moved to a different position has flowered this year! This is a Cymbidium Alexanderii, Westonbirt. Due to Mr Holford's presence of high quality orchids and flowers at the show at Chelsea he was commemorated with an award that is given out in his name. It is awarded to the best exhibit of plants and/or flowers (Inc fruit and veg) staged during the year by an amateur or group of amateurs at one of the society's shows.
A reminder that our next garden tour is Weds June 10th - bookings available here through the link below. The gardens really are stunning at the moment!
