This Volunteers’ Week (1 - 7 June), we’re saying a huge thank you to every volunteer who gives their time, skills, enthusiasm and care to support Llanthony Secunda Priory 💚

Our volunteers make an extraordinary difference, welcoming visitors on open days, sharing stories as tour guides, supporting events, and helping preserve our beautiful grounds and historic buildings.

Because of our volunteers, Llanthony is more than a heritage site, it’s a place where history, community and connection all come together.

On Saturday we made the most of the sunshine with our first Cheese & Cider day.

There was cheese rolling, Morris Dancing and plenty of ice creams consumed! 🍦

Thank you to everyone who attended, it was a brilliant day and the plans for making next year even bigger and better are already underway! 🍻🧀

Join us for a fascinating evening exploring the life of Dr Francis Thomas Bond - a respected physician, scientist, inventor, and one of Gloucester’s most intriguing yet often overlooked historical figures.

In this talk, Rose McDowell will delve into Bond’s remarkable life and work, from his clinical practice and inventions to his prominent role in the late Victorian vaccination debates.

A former resident of Llanthony Secunda Priory, Bond founded the Jenner Society in 1896, an early pro-vaccination organisation that offers a fascinating insight into the history of public health, medical campaigning, and controversy.

👋 What you’ll do:
• Welcome visitors & share information
• Support events & activities
• Help with parking, set-up & pack-down
• Keep the site tidy
• Work as part of a friendly team

🎉 Events include open days, family events & performances (mostly 10am–3pm).

Things are getting cheesy this month at Llanthony Secunda Priory! 🧀

We're bringing you not one but TWO events centred around some of our county's favourite exports - Cheese 🧀 & Cider🍻 and you're invited!

Set within the stunning historic grounds of the Priory, our family-friendly open day on Saturday 23rd May will bring together local producers, traditional entertainment, and hands-on activities for all ages.

Later the same day we will be joined by Historian, Andrew Mellor, for a ticketed event in our Henry Dene Hall where he will talk about the history of cider making in Gloucestershire and invite you to sample some of the locally produced cider, paired with cheeses from a local cheesemonger. Tickets are on sale now but selling fast!

Join us on Thursday 7th May at 2pm for a free, creative workshop as part of Threads 2026: The Fabric of Gloucester, held in the beautiful surroundings of Llanthony Secunda Priory.

This inspiring session invites you to explore the theme of belonging through craft. Whether you stitch, paint, knit, crochet, or use mixed media, you’ll create a unique piece that reflects what makes you feel connected and at home.

About the Project
Threads: The Fabric of Gloucester is part of the wider THREADS programme, inviting individuals and communities to contribute handmade textile pieces exploring identity and belonging. All completed pieces will be brought together in a special exhibition at Llanthony Secunda Priory from 19–21 June 2026, as part of Refugee Week.
