Gloucester Heritage:
The Sword Inn

With the red cross of St George’s Day flying above it, The Sword Inn stands as a proud symbol of England’s heritage right in the heart of Westgate Street 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Dating back to the 16th century, this Grade II listed building began as two timber-framed merchant houses before becoming an inn by the late 1600s. For over 400 years, it has been part of Gloucester’s daily life, welcoming locals, travellers, and traders through its doors.

Its story goes beyond architecture. One part of the building is linked to the real-life tailor, John Prichard, who inspired Beatrix Potter’s “The Tailor of Gloucester”, connecting this street to a tale known around the world.

Today, The Sword Inn is operated under the Craft Union Pub Company, continuing its long tradition as a place for the community to gather.

It remains a living piece of Gloucester’s history where national identity, local stories, and everyday life still meet.

🌍 Earth Day Spotlight: Rethinking the Way We Shop 🌱

“Hi, I’m Owen, co-manager of Gloucester Refillery. It’s where you can shop in a way that reduces waste and helps the planet.”

This Earth Day, we’re shining a light on simple, everyday choices that make a real difference. At Gloucester Refillery, their idea is to take only what you need and leave unnecessary packaging behind.

Instead of buying large, pre-packaged items wrapped in layers of plastic, you can:
🫙 Bring your own containers (or use theirs)
⚖️ Buy exactly the amount you need
even just one egg or a single spice
🌱 Cut down on waste and reduce your environmental impact

“Plastic is incredibly useful, but it’s not something we can afford to waste. So much of it is built into the way we shop, and as consumers, we don’t always get a choice. We’re here to offer that alternative.”

By selling goods in bulk and encouraging reuse, thousands of pieces of plastic can be saved from landfill and the wider environment every single week.

And it’s not just about sustainability, it’s about community too.

“It might feel a bit different at first, but we’re always here to help guide you. It’s a chance to shop more ethically, reduce your impact, and even have a bit of fun while doing it.”

Owen has also seen Gloucester evolve over the years, with more independent businesses, stronger community spirit, and a growing movement towards positive change.

✨ “It’s becoming a place I’m really proud to be part of.”

This Earth Day, why not try something new? Refill, reuse, and rethink the way you shop. Small changes really do add up.
