Volunteers’ Week. 2026

A Derbyshire mum is using the loss of her son to help stop speeding – with drivers saying her story has changed their minds.

Steph Alger has partnered with the force’s Community Speed Watch scheme, to tell her powerful story to drivers who have been caught driving too fast. Steph’s son Etienne, who preferred to be known as Justin, was only 18 when he lost his life.

Justin had been traveling near Dove Holes at around 66mph, which was only a little over the legal limit. However, the road was wet and unbeknownst to him, he had a nail in his tyre. He took a corner too quickly and lost control of the car, which fell down a ravine to the side of the road.

Since then, Steph has shared her family’s story to save others from the same heartbreak.

We first featured Steph back in 2024, when she bravely went on camera to talk about losing Justin. Now a link to that video is being sent to drivers who are caught speeding, as part of the force’s Community Speed Watch scheme.

Community Speed Watch sees around 900 volunteers get out into their local communities with speed guns, so the force can get information about which of the county’s roads need more enforcement activity. Drivers who are caught going too fast receive a letter about their speed. As part of this, they are introduced to Steph’s story and can view the video via a QR code.

And when drivers were recently asked about it, 91% of those who had viewed the video agreed it made them want to reduce their speed.

Debbie Turner, who co-ordinates Speed Watch for the force, said: “We’re so grateful to Steph for working with us – she is turning her personal tragedy into something which could save lives.

“It’s amazing the impact this video is having on drivers. And none of this would be possible without our volunteers being out in their communities. I particularly want to say thank you to them since this week is Volunteers’ Week.

“The information from our Speed Watch volunteers is so valuable when we plan how to tackle drivers who are speeding. It helps to show us which areas officers need to focus on, as well as educating the drivers themselves about the risks they are taking.

“The letters are a first step to try and change people’s behaviour. Those caught speeding again can receive a personal visit from a police officer, providing education on the risks and consequences and encouraging safer driving. Our volunteers are really making a difference.”

Could you be a Community Speed Watch volunteer? The scheme is run by the force and relies on people giving up their time to join their local groups - find out more and how to join on our website. https://orlo.uk/hgPgf

Our Mini Police officers from Gamesley Primary School had a fantastic session on Friday! 👮‍♂️

We welcomed our Crime Scene Investigator team, who gave the children a brilliant insight into their work. The session included learning about fingerprints, footprints, and how evidence is carefully gathered at crime scenes.

The students were engaged, curious, and asked some great questions—future detectives in the making!

Well done to everyone involved for making it such an enjoyable and informative experience.

Local Priorities - Speeding Traffic Update - Community Speed Watch Event held in Tintwistle

Glossop SNT (PCSO Buller) and 3 volunteers from the Hadfield Community Speed Watch Team completed an event on the A628 Manchester Rd, Tintwistle this afternoon, Saturday 6th June - between 1.50 pm and 3.00 pm. The speed limit on this road is 30 mph.

During today's event 1748 vehicles went by the team, of those 9 were recorded driving above 35 mph. with the highest speed being recorded at 39 mph.

This location had been identified by local residents and councillors from Tintwistle as one of their Policing Priorities (Speeding) chosen by the community - with this location identified as a busy high-risk road - through speeding.

As we celebrate the end of National Volunteers’ Week, Glossop SNT and the CREST team at HQ would like to take a moment to thank each one of our volunteers in our team for the incredible contribution they make to our communities.

Their time, dedication, and commitment to Community Speed Watch truly makes a difference. By volunteering, they are helping to make our roads safer, influencing driver’s behaviour & raising awareness. That impact reaches far beyond the roadside—it helps protect families, neighbours, and the wider community.

We know that volunteering often means giving up your own time, sometimes in less-than-ideal weather, and always with a strong sense of responsibility. Your efforts do not go unnoticed, and they are very much appreciated.

On behalf of everyone involved, thank you for the energy, enthusiasm, and professionalism you bring to CSW. You are an essential part of what makes this initiative so successful.

We are incredibly grateful to have you as part of the team.

If you are interested in finding out or joining/becoming a voluntary speed watch team member then please contact us: [email protected]

| A man who was banned from the Co-op has been jailed after breaching his Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) and committing several shop thefts in Glossop.

Raymond Skelly was given a Criminal Behaviour Order in April 2025, which prohibited him from entering the Co-op, Pennine Way, Simmondley, Glossop. However, on 16 May 2026, he breached this order by entering the store and stealing items worth more than £70.

On the same day, the 47-year-old went into Iceland, Spring Gardens, Buxton and stole items valued at £75.

Two days later, he went into B&M, Norfolk Street, Glossop, which he was banned from entering under his CBO and stole a number of items.

At Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Saturday 23 May, Skelly, of Greenbank, Hadfield, pleaded guilty to three counts of theft and breaching a Criminal Behaviour Order. He was subsequently jailed for 16 weeks.

He also breached the conditions of his licence following release from prison for previous offences and has been recalled to prison as a result.

Skelly remains subject to a Criminal Behaviour Order, which is in force until April 2027. The order bans him from entering Tesco and Boots in Hadfield, the Co-op in Simmondley, as well as any other shop from which he has been prohibited. He must also leave any shop or commercial premises in the UK if asked to do so by staff.

Sergeant Patrick Haley from Glossop and Buxton Safer Neighbourhood Team said:

"Skelly was dealt with for similar offences in April and despite being sent to prison on that occasion, his pattern of offending has clearly continued on his release.

"The message just doesn't seem to be getting through to him, so we will continue to arrest him and deal with him whenever he breaches these conditions and commits offences.

"We'd therefore urge the public to let us know if Skelly breaks any of the conditions of his CBO so we can make sure he is brought to justice.

“We will continue to take action against shop theft in the area and work closely with local businesses.”

GOOD NEWS THURSDAY

Meet Benny – our four-legged friend who definitely isn’t a fan of thunder! ⛈️💨

Frightened by the storm, poor Benny decided to make a run for it this morning.

While out on the A6, one of our officers spotted him on his unexpected solo adventure.

Not wanting him to come to any harm, the officer opened the passenger door… and Benny didn’t hesitate—he hopped straight in and made himself right at home! 🚓🐶

After enjoying a few hours of VIP treatment at the police station (and soaking up plenty of fuss and attention, of course!), we were able to track down his owners.

We’re delighted to say Benny is now safely back where he belongs—with his family! 🏡❤️
