NEWS: Fife's Young Ambassadors developing the leaders of tomorrow
More than 150 young people from secondary schools across Fife have come together to strengthen their leadership skills and help shape opportunities for physical activity and sport in their schools and communities.
The Fife Active Schools Young Ambassador Day 2026, held at Fife College's St Brycedale Campus in Kirkcaldy, brought together Young Ambassadors from across the region to develop skills they can take back to their schools and use to inspire others to get active.
The annual event is part of the wider Young Ambassador programme, which supports young people to become leaders and role models within their school communities. Through the programme, participants gain experience in communication, teamwork, organisation and decision-making, while some leadership pathways also offer opportunities to achieve recognised qualifications.
A particular highlight of the day was the role played by Fife's Platinum Ambassadors, who spent part of their summer holidays planning and delivering the event. They designed a programme of workshops, team-building activities and discussions aimed at helping fellow ambassadors build confidence, develop leadership skills and share ideas for increasing participation in physical activity and sport.
Young Ambassadors also had the opportunity to connect with peers from across Fife, exchange experiences and explore new approaches to creating inclusive and engaging opportunities for young people to be active.
The contribution of Young Ambassadors significantly increases the reach and quality of Active Schools provisions. By volunteering their time to support programmes such as holiday provision, disability-specific programmes, extra-curricular activities, school sport competitions and transition events, they help remove barriers to participation and create positive experiences for their peers.
Their involvement provides younger participants with relatable role models, builds confidence during key transition periods, and strengthens pathways into sport and physical activity. Through developing leadership, communication and organisational skills, Young Ambassadors not only make a difference in their schools and communities but also gain valuable experiences that support their own personal development.
Ellie Templeman, a Young Ambassador from Auchmuty High School said: "I really enjoyed Young Ambassador Day and getting to meet lots of new people. In this role I want to have fun and gain new skills and experiences outside of the typical school day."
Ronan Capon, Fife Active Schools Manager, said: "Young Ambassadors make a real difference in their school communities. By leading activities, encouraging participation and helping shape opportunities for their peers, they develop valuable skills while making sport and physical activity more accessible and inclusive.
"We are particularly proud that many of our leadership pathways now provide opportunities for young people to gain qualifications alongside practical experience. These experiences help build confidence and develop skills that can support them in further education, employment and future leadership roles.
"The enthusiasm, creativity and commitment shown by the young people at this year's event demonstrates the strength of youth leadership across Fife, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact they will continue to make in their schools and communities."
Following the event, Fife's 278 Young Ambassadors will continue to be supported by their Active Schools Coordinators as they put their ideas into action and help create more opportunities for their fellow pupils to get involved in sport and physical activity.
