✨ Hello, I’m the Yellowhammer! ✨

(You might hear me before you see me… a little bit of bread and no cheese! 🎶)

I’m a bright, cheerful bird with a sunny yellow face and a warm, streaky brown back - a proper countryside character if ever there was one. You’ll usually find me flitting along hedgerows, farmland edges, and open fields, especially where there are seeds to snack on and shrubs to perch in. I like a bit of structure in my life - hedges, field margins, and rough grassland are my kind of neighbourhood.

Sadly, I’m not quite as common as I once was. Changes in farming have made it trickier for birds like me to find food and safe nesting spots. That’s why I’ve been chosen as one of 100 very special animals, plants and fungi helping humans monitor how well the natural world is doing 🌍💚

If you’re out for a walk, keep your ears open for my distinctive song or your eyes peeled for a flash of yellow along a hedgerow. If you spot me, I’d love it if you could record your sighting - it helps people understand how we’re doing and where we need a helping hand.

Let’s work together to keep the countryside singing! 🎶💛

✅ FACT CHECK✅

You might have seen some discussion about our school food service coming to a close and we want to clarify the situation.

In simple terms, it is no longer financially viable for the council to provide a school food service. It has made substantial losses in every year since the pandemic and some of these were over £2.5m.

Last year’s improvement was due to substantial price rises to schools, large restructures of teams and job losses.

Competing with big market players is not an option anymore and schools and academies have continued to choose to find alternative providers – 80 over the last three years. The smaller the service becomes the less competitive it is.

Children’s health and nutrition is crucial and every school has a new meal provider.

We value our staff hugely and as a professional organisation, have worked to keep redundancies to an absolute minimum. The vast majority are transferring to new suppliers and we’re continuing to support the small number of staff who are at risk of redundancy.

Initially, we estimated that one-off redundancy costs could be £650,000 but due to effective management of the process, the current estimate is £360,000 and could reduce further.

We marked this carers week with a special event with cabinet member for adult social care Michael Squires thanking carers for everything they do.

We want carers to feel recognised, valued and know that they are not alone. For support visit https://orlo.uk/EzwnA

❓Quick Fire Quiz ❓

Age Restricted Sales, do you know the rules?

Some products aren’t for everyone at every age and there is good reason.

Age restrictions keep young people safe. Businesses need to put procedures in place to sell responsibly.

Do you know the age restrictions on products? Have look below 👀

🔞Alcohol – 18

🔞Tobacco and vapes – 18

🎆Fireworks – 18

🎉Party poppers – 16

🛑Bladed products - 18

⚠️Energy drinks – Currently no age restriction

⚠️Nicotine pouches – Currently no age restrictions

Selling restricted products to underage customers is illegal and can get businesses into serious trouble.

Shops should always ask for and check ID, not sell age restricted products to young people to stay on the right side of the law.

Looking for a beautiful white smile?

Our team at East Midlands Airport regularly intercept imported teeth whitening products which are illegal for supply to consumers in the UK.

Tooth whitening products containing or releasing between 0.1% and 6% hydrogen peroxide can ONLY be sold to dental practitioners, not directly to consumers.

Remember, the law says that only registered dentists, dental therapists, dental hygienists or clinical dental technicians working to the prescription of a dentist can legally and safely provide tooth whitening treatment.

Follow NHS advice at on safe teeth whitening at: https://www.nhs.uk/tests-and-treatments/teeth-whitening/.

You can also search the General Dental Council’s online register to check if your practitioner is registered https://www.gdc-uk.org/
