The Library of Avalon

The Library of Avalon The only publicly-accessible esoteric library in the UK, perhaps even in Europe!

Thank you Ishtara, Sarah Curtis and friends for putting together such an uplifting, inspiring and fun evening of Poetry and Music at St Ben's on behalf of the LoA. An evening as much about embodying the creative spirit and community as raising money. The spirit of the LoA lives on even if the physical library is in forced hibernation. Thank you for your creative efforts and dynamism.

Last week Rainbow Restoration came and had a look under the floorboards with a camera and left us with a special dehumidifier which has been pulling air from under the floor to dry it out.

When we explained that what they thought was simply earthen foundations they could see under the floorboards was in fact all flood debris the necesity of the underfloor cleanup became obvious.

Just like in our reading room, the true annexe floor is laid with blue lias stone, flat and smooth- not muddy.

Our volunteers came in daily for a week to empty out all three dehumidifiers, which continued to quickly fill despite the dry weather.

Carpet has been removed!
Now we wait to see what has been washed into the space beneath this flooring... it will definitely need a clean going by the smell alone.

Prior to the 2014 flood there was always an unpleasant smell in the library. When that previous flood in August '14 hit, it soaked everything so substantially that the floors had to be removed. Underneath the boards we discovered the aftermath of smaller floods, silt and dirt had been building up, the constant damp and bacteria the secret culprits to the stench.

The thorough clean that followed combined with consistent use of dehumidifiers cleared the library of this issue until the June '26 flood.

With the knowledge that this last flood caried water from the foul sewers just outside the library, we must ensure that this space is again cleaned thoroughly before we move back into the building to protect the health and comfort of all who enter the library space.

Once the floor finally dried out our volunteers stepped back in, moving all of the furniture out of the annexe and into the reading room.

Today we removed a few more of the shelves from the annexe walls to allow access for repairs.

Now we are just waiting for rainbow restoration to come and remove the carpet and finish any pre-repair cleaning they have planned for the annexe!

Last Monday in preperation for Rainbow Restoration to come and clean the reading room floor we dusted all of the shelves and window seat area, trimmed the hedge and cleaned the windows inside & out.
(Although not our responsibility, we also gave the bench outside a good once over- as it still had silt from the flood on it!)

On Tuesday Rainbow restoration cleaned the stone floor, filling their machine with dirty water twice over.
Afterwards Ishtara & Richard mopped the hard to reach corners such as the fireplace and cleaned all the edging allong the walls, removing the flood line. (Another 7+ buckets of dirty water!)

The dehumidifiers and fan made quick work of drying the floor in the hot weather.
