"Lord Doherty, delivering the Lord Rodger Memorial Lecture in Glasgow last month, drew attention to the declining volume of Scottish appeals reaching the Supreme Court."

"In his lecture, Lord Doherty concluded: “If the Court of Session and the Supreme Court do not have sufficient opportunities to decide important points of law the development of Scots law is liable to suffer.”

Important developments at Glasgow Sheriff Court as work concludes on the first phase of a significant project to formalise a bank of shrieval-approved civil interlocutors.

Led by the Sheriff Principal and developed collaboratively with justice partners over the past nine months, this initiative aims to improve turnaround times, enhance consistency, and support an even higher standard of service within the civil courts.

From 15 June, practitioners may notice a new style and format for interlocutors at Glasgow Sheriff Court, including:
• Replication of the instance of the action above the body of the interlocutor
• Inclusion of the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom
• Continued electronic authentication by the Sheriff

This project reflects the value of constructive engagement between the courts and justice partners, with ongoing opportunities for feedback through groups including the Civil Court Users Group and Social Work Referrals Liaison Group.

Continued collaboration with court users and stakeholders will be key as these changes are implemented and refined in practice. Members of the RFPG who wish to provide feedback or raise any queries should contact the library in the first instance.

🧑‍⚖️LORD PRESIDENT SAYS AI COULD LEAD TO A FASTER AND MORE EFFICIENT JUSTICE SYSTEM🤖

Scotland’s most senior judge has told the RFPG the use of AI in the justice system is here to stay, predicting that it will not “spell the end of judges and lawyers”.

The use of Artificial Intelligence is one of the most pressing issues facing the legal profession.

The Lord President, the Rt Hon Lord Pentland, provided a unique insight into the benefits and risks of using the new technology during a major speech at the Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow (RFPG). He said:

“My working assumption is that AI is entering the courtroom to stay. All judicial officeholders must be ready, able to understand it and make appropriate use of it. That inevitably means the profession must adapt. To paraphrase a famous saying: ‘You may not be interested in AI, but AI will soon be interested in you’."
