On this day in 1914, World War One officially began with the shot that was heard around the world.

A single event triggered a chain reaction that saw brave servicemen and women give their lives for civilians around the world. From the Western Front to the lives lost at home, this war shaped our history books.

Today we would like to honour the brave individuals who put their lives on the line for a safer future.

SSAFA has had the honour of helping many WWI veterans in their time of need, and we will continue to recognise and uphold their courage, commitment and service.

SSAFA, as always, stands by the entire Armed Forces community and we will continue to offer practical, emotional and financial support to anyone who needs it.

Life as a military partner has its ups and downs. For each moment of pride, there’s a moment of concern. For every adventure, there’s a desire for stability.

For each opportunity, there’s a challenge. Many people outside the Armed Forces community never see this, but nor do they see the reverse: concern becomes pride, wanting stability becomes a yearning for adventure, and challenges become opportunities.

RAF welfare officers, Megan and Dani share candidly about the realities of interrupted careers, regular upheaval, and the loneliness that can come with moving from place to place.

They, and countless other military partners, know that starting again in a new area, rebuilding friendships, and finding work that fits around military life can be exhausting.

The Perth and Kinross branch of SSAFA held a meeting on 13th May.

It was amazing to hear the stories of how our caseworkers and volunteers have helped and changed the lives of veterans over time.

It was also great hearing from our guest speakers about the other local support in the area aimed at helping veterans.

We hope that everyone had a lovely time, and we hope to continue our goals of supporting members of the UK military and their families.

This week is (1-7 June). Meet Phil Ward, Treasurer for Perth and Kinross branch, who has volunteered with SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity for over five years - pictured receiving his recent Meritorious Award from the Lord Lieutenant of Perth and Kinross for his voluntary service.

When asked what his motivation was for deciding to volunteer with SSAFA, Phil says: "I loved serving in HM Forces for over 30 years and decided as I approached retirement it would be time to help others less fortunate than me - SSAFA ticked that box in many ways.

"I very much enjoy working as a volunteer in a team of like-minded people - some of whom I have served with for years, and all of who have become good friends along the way - the end results of our volunteering efforts are often very humbling."

For anyone thinking of volunteering with SSAFA, Phil says: "What are you waiting for? Give it a go! The commitment is as much or as little as you are able to give. It's rewarding with bells on. I firmly believe you could do better than look yourself in the mirror every morning and wonder 'what am I going to do today?'."

On 7 June 1944, wounded British troops, evacuated from the Normandy beaches after , are helped down the ramp of a landing ship at Gosport in Hampshire.

Gosport served as a critical reception point for the rapid evacuation of Allied casualties from the Normandy beaches. After receiving tea and assistance, injured troops were transferred from landing craft to ambulances, with many being taken to hospital trains.

While wounded returned, Gosport continued its role as a key embarkation point for follow-up forces, with vehicles and supplies still being loaded into Landing Ships Tank (LSTs) for transport to France.
