Pride month is celebrated every year in June, a time dedicated to commemorating LGBTQ+ individuals and raising awareness of issues affecting the community. This badge features the logo for Scotland’s first official LGBTQ+ pride which took place in Edinburgh in 1995. An estimated 3000 people attended, marching from Boughton Street to the Meadows via Princes Street. HIV and AIDS activism and banners protesting Section 28 were at the heart of the festival, and unlike today’s pride events, the march had no corporate sponsors. In the years after 1995, Pride Scotland alternated between Edinburgh and Glasgow, with the second festival in 1996 taking place on Glasgow Green. Since then, pride events in Scotland have grown significantly, with various events taking place all over the country.

Before the first national pride, other public LGBTQ+ events took place in Scotland such as Lark in the Park in 1988. Just days after the introduction of Section 28, the Scottish Homosexual Action Group organised the event to oppose the legislation implemented by the Conservative government. Lark in the Park took place in Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh, and was held again in 1989 and 1992.

The Saltire Series by Alixandra Prybyla, part of We Make Museums: Sustaining and Changing Worlds for Glasgow International Festival of Contemporary Art 2026

What does it mean to belong?

Created through cyanotype printmaking, The Saltire Series brings together the stories, objects and experiences of immigrants and refugees living in Glasgow. Across six Scottish flags, personal belongings - carried across borders, gifted, discovered, treasured or used in daily rituals - leave their traces, creating a collective portrait of migration, memory and home.

For artist Alixandra Prybyla, a Louisiana Creole woman who immigrated to Scotland five years ago, the project began as a response to displacement and a desire to explore belonging beyond ideas of productivity or contribution. Through a series of workshops, participants were invited to reflect on the objects that connect them to people, places and identities.

Together, the flags suggest that Scottish identity is not fixed, but continually remade through the lives, movements and stories of those who call Scotland home.

We are saddened and appalled by the scenes witnessed in Glasgow city centre last night.

At Glasgow Women’s Library, we believe everyone deserves to feel safe, welcome and valued. As Scotland’s first Library of Sanctuary, we stand in solidarity with refugees, people seeking asylum and all those seeking safety and belonging.

The Library of Sanctuary award recognises libraries that go above and beyond to create spaces of welcome, inclusion and support. This recognition reflects our long-standing commitment to being a place where women from all walks of life can access resources, build connections, share experiences and find community.

In times when division and hostility are made visible, our commitment to compassion, dignity and solidarity remains unwavering. Glasgow Women’s Library will continue to be a space of sanctuary, learning and collective care for all who walk through our doors.

'Duplicates Only' by Sohaila Baluch is now open at Glasgow Women’s Library as part of 'We Make Museums: Sustaining and changing worlds' for 2026

Over the past several months, London-based artist Sohaila Baluch has spent time within the library alongside staff, volunteers and visitors, reflecting on the gestures that keep cultural spaces alive: rehousing, cleaning, carrying, shelving, circulation, listening, returning and making tea.

Throughout the exhibition, embroidered teal dust cloths hang from shelves and rest among books, while a mirrored plaque sits on the front desk and a corten steel sign marks the library entrance. In Log of Care (pictured), overlapping voices, touch and shared conversations move through the building, intertwined with repeated acts of cleaning, stitching and care.

This body of work draws attention to the often-unseen labour that sustains cultural spaces, celebrating the everyday practices of maintenance, attention and collective care.

Story Café Special: In Conversation with Eleanor Anstruther

Thursday 18 June | 1:00pm–2:30pm
Free | 16+

Join us as we welcome anarchist aristocrat Eleanor Anstruther, author of FALLOUT — a darkly funny coming-of-age novel about identity, family secrets and activism, set against the backdrop of the Greenham Common Peace Camp.

Eleanor will be in conversation with GWL's Donna Moore, discussing the inspiration behind FALLOUT, the unique role women can play in activism, and Eleanor's own remarkable life journey — from leaving behind a privileged upbringing to chasing eclipses, founding a commune, and building a stone circle by hand.

A fascinating conversation exploring storytelling, resistance, activism and the many ways women shape change.
