Planning permission is being sought to demolish Union Street's historic Egyptian Halls, completed in 1872. The building is one of the most spectacular examples of the work of internationally-renowned Victorian architect Alexander 'Greek' Thomson. Unless public money can be found to save it, the building may be condemned as soon as Summer 2011 and demolished. Once the developers have been granted p

ermission to knock it down, Scotland will lose one of its architectural jewels. It was described by Neil Baxter, secretary of the Royal Incorporation Of Architects in Scotland, as "the finest surviving example of an Alexander Thomson commercial building. This is a building of the first international importance and it would be a great pity if lack of a relatively small amount of money in terms of public expenditure, condemned this building." Despite decades of neglect the building is sound and can still be saved for future purpose - if we act soon enough.

It’s not quite pitch black but the sign on the first-floor landing of the Egyptian Halls in Glasgow is still very nearly impossible to read.

Reimagining Egyptian Halls - New Glasgow Society, 7-8th December 10-4

The Alexander Thomson Society recently invited designers from around the world to submit innovative, imaginative and purposeful ideas for the reuse of Egyptian Halls. This exhibition is a showcase of the responses which were submitted.

Egyptian Halls was completed in 1872 on Union Street by the celebrated architect Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson. Despite its Category A listing, the majority of the building has effectively lain dormant for the last 40 years and, although structurally sound, has suffered damage through water ingress and lack of adequate or appropriate maintenance.

A number of proposals have been developed for the building over the years, but none have been successfully delivered. The purpose of this competition and exhibition is not to form a feasibility study or develop an architectural approach, but to raise awareness of an important part of Glasgow’s architectural heritage which unfortunately is in a poor condition and at significant risk of further decay and possible demolition.
