On behalf of the whole Lowland RFCA team, we’d like to say a huge ‘Congratulations!’ to our Estates Team’s Hannah Riding on being named as the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders Army Cadet Force Winner at Highland Reserve Forces and Cadets Association’s inaugural Cadet Adult Recognition Awards (CARAs) last week. 🎉

Hannah, aka Staff Sergeant Riding, received this very special accolade during an awards ceremony at Perth Town Hall after being nominated by Cadets from her Battalion who were keen to show their appreciation for everything that she does to ensure they get the best Cadet experience possible.

We’ll be hosting our own CARAs later this year so be sure to stay tuned for updates in the coming months!

In the meantime, if you’d like to find out more about what the CARAs are and why they mean so much to the Cadet Force Adult Volunteers who receive them, click here: https://bit.ly/4uddB8a

Last Thursday we had the great pleasure of supporting 603 (City of Edinburgh) Squadron RAuxAF in hosting a very special Business Breakfast and Employer Engagement briefing at their townhouse Headquarters.

The event, which saw representatives from Forces-friendly employers of all sizes and sectors attending, aimed to highlight the many opportunities and capabilities offered by the RAF Reserves and the invaluable importance of employer support in ensuring Reservists can train and develop so that they are ready to deploy whenever the need should arise.

Amongst a series of informative and personal presentations from both Reservist and employer perspectives, we were also delighted to present SRUC and Murray Plate Group with their Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Bronze Award, and we would like to thank His Grace the Duke of Hamilton for coming along to present the awards as Honorary Air Commodore of 603 Squadron.

We’re starting off our morning with a few shout-outs to our Lowland Royal Air Force Air Cadets and the fantastic work they’ve been doing over the past few weeks.

First up, we’d like to say well done to 449 Lanark RAF Air Cadets' Cadet Sergeant Russell, who recently completed his gliding scholarship and first solo flight at 661 Volunteer Gliding Squadron RAF Kirknewton.

Back on solid ground, Cadets from 2452 (Shawlands Academy) Squadron were busy lending their support to the Glasgow Philharmonic Male Voice Choir during their Spring Concert at Glasgow City Chambers, welcoming audience members, handing out programmes and assisting with fundraising.

Last but certainly not least, we’d like to congratulate Cadet Corporal Benington from 327 Kilmarnock Sqn RAF Air Cadets on achieving her Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. A sunlit celebration at Buckingham Palace was certainly well-deserved for your efforts!

These are just a few of the many amazing opportunities open to young people in the RAF Air Cadets. To find out more, click here: https://bit.ly/4uedpFZ

There’s a world of opportunity to explore through a career with the Army Reserve.

By setting aside just 27 days of your year, becoming an Army Reservist can open doors to various trades and qualifications, as alongside regular fitness and combat training, you can also develop specialist skills as a medic, a driver, an engineer, a chef… the list really does go on and on!

This is perfect for anyone looking to enhance the skills they already have from their everyday job, or indeed for anyone who’s keen to explore new career options.

As if that weren’t enough, Army Reservists enjoy many opportunities to travel abroad and pursue sporting passions, often at the same time!

So whether you fancy skiing in the French Alps, sailing in the Mediterranean or a good old hike through the Scottish Highlands, you’re almost certain to find your ideal adventure in the Army Reserve, as evidenced by the photos from our friends in the Scottish & North Irish Yeomanry (SNIY)

It’s been a lively couple of weeks for Lowland’s Sea Cadets and we love to see it!

Let’s start with Musselburgh Sea Cadets & Royal Marines Cadets, who recently attended a Careers Awareness Day with London North Eastern Railway at Edinburgh Waverley Station. This event gave both the Cadets and adult instructors some fascinating insights into the many different career options available within the rail industry, including giving them some hands-on experience with train tours and a chance to try out a driving simulator. 🚂

Meanwhile, Paisley Sea Cadets have been busy showing that it takes more than a spot of bad weather to keep them from enjoying their boating season to the fullest. In spite of the wind, rain and even a few hailstones, the Cadets got stuck into a rowing course on the Clyde, working as a team and having a fantastic time while doing so. 🛶

Last but by no means least, we’d like to offer our warmest congratulations to the District Officer for Sea Cadets Edinburgh District, Lieutenant Commander Ewan Galloway, on receiving the Scottish Veterans Awards’ first ever Cadet Adult Instructor of the Year - truly a well-deserved recognition of your tireless dedication to the Sea Cadets. BZ to you, sir! 🎉

Royal Air Force Reservists recently embarked on Exercise Dutch Courage, visiting a number of war graves in the Netherlands and paying respects to Armed Forces personnel who lost their lives during the Second World War.

Alongside the various Remembrance ceremonies they attended, the Reservists enjoyed the opportunity to research and discuss key operations conducted in the Netherlands and their relevance to current warfare strategies and tactics.

Exercises such as this are a crucial element of Reservist training and development, as they complement the practical and operational skills they gain through training with historical knowledge and strengthened appreciation for the importance of international friendship and co-operation.

We would like to thank the Scottish Reserve Support Wing for sharing their stories and photos from Exercise Dutch Courage with us.

We’re now just one week away from our Annual Association Meeting at Heriot-Watt University, so it’s time to introduce another one of our guest speakers for the event.

Professor Gerri Matthews-Smith is Director of the Centre for Military Research, Education and Professional Practice at Edinburgh Napier University, as well as Chair of the Edinburgh Universities’ Military Education Committee (MEC) and Co-Chair of the Council of Military Education Committees (COMEC).

Having worked extensively with veterans, Cadets and military families throughout her career, Gerri is keen to share her insights with our Association members in line with our event theme: Partners in Progress.

Many thanks to Gerri for taking the time to speak with our Comms team ahead of the meeting, and we look forward to hearing more from you on Thursday 14 May.

We’d like to say a huge ‘Congratulations!’ to 215 Scottish Multirole Medical Regiment on their incredible successes over the last few weeks.

Our first shout-out goes to Sergeant Iona Stuart, who was named as Reservist of the Year at this year’s Scottish Veterans Awards. Not quite content with balancing military service and a flourishing nursing career, Sgt Stuart is also a Silver Medalist for the British Army Indoor Rowing Team.

Congratulations on such outstanding achievements, Sgt Stuart - very well-deserved!

We also have to highlight the 215 MMR Team coming away with the Royal College of Nursing Scotland’s Nursing Team of the Year Award - another highly prestigious and greatly deserved win for such a skilled and dedicated team.
