Flying the Flag for Merchant Navy Day

In honour of Merchant Navy Day (3 September), our Employer Engagement team braved the ever-changing Scottish elements to raise the Red Ensign at Lowland House.

This was done to commemorate not just the crew members of civilian fleets who lost their lives in past conflicts, but also to pay tribute to those who continue working tirelessly to keep supply lines open across the world to this day, often in the face of great adversity.

It’s hard to believe it’s been two whole weeks since we visited Glasgow & Lanarkshire Battalion ACF on their annual camp at Barry Buddon.

As part of our trip, we were lucky enough to chat with Corporal Jessica Murphy from 3 Platoon Newmains, who told us all about what she and her fellow Cadets had been getting up to at camp, the skills she’s learned in her four and a half years as an Army Cadet, and how those skills will help to shape her future.

Last Friday our Employer Engagement team headed to Edinburgh for an Armed Forces Covenant signing with Public Services Delivery Scotland - PSD Scotland.

Merging together NHS National Services Scotland (NSS) and NHS Education for Scotland, both of which had already achieved Gold Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Awards for their commitment to supporting the Armed Forces Community, the PSD Scotland team were keen to show that they would continue to honour their previous pledges under the new name.

The new Armed Forces Covenant was signed on behalf of PSD Scotland by Chief Executive Karen Reid, who commented that the organisation appreciates everything that the Armed Forces do, and how privileged the NHS is to benefit from the skills, values and experiences of all the Reservists, veterans and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers within its workforce.

Signing the Covenant on behalf of the Ministry of Defence was Wing Commander Derek Read of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force, who praised PSD Scotland for reaffirming its pledges and emphasised the immense value of employer support to Reservist personnel.

We’d like to say a very big ‘thank you’ to Glasgow & Lanarkshire Battalion ACF for inviting us along to their annual camp at Barry Buddon last Thursday.

As always, we had a great time seeing how much the Cadets have enjoyed their time at camp, putting everything they’ve learned throughout the year into practice, applying new skills and having a fantastic time with old and new friends.

We also love seeing how well supported the Cadets are by their adult instructors and the battalion’s Professional Support Staff (PSS) without whose hard work and dedication none of these camps and activities would be possible.

During our Employer Engagement Breakfast with 603 (City of Edinburgh) Squadron RAuxAF back in May, we had the pleasure of chatting with Kris Mackenzie, a RAF Regiment Gunner who had come along to the event to share some of his incredible experiences as a Reservist, and to highlight how valuable employer support can be in ensuring Reservists can train and develop to the same standards as their Regular counterparts.

Reservists from the 6th Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland (6 SCOTS) recently set off for the sunny shores of France on Exercise Lowland Poppy, a Battlefield study tour concentrating on leadership, logistics and operational strategies during the Second World War - specifically the 1944 Normandy campaign.

The team stopped off at various sites in order to deepen both their historical and military knowledge, including the Airborne Museum of Sainte-Mère-Eglise, Utah Beach, the Longues-sur-Mer battery, Omaha Beach and Arromanches-les-Bains, a vital site to the Allied Forces during the D-Day campaign in June 1944.

Exercise Lowland Poppy gave the visiting Reservists a chance to retrace the footsteps of the brave service personnel who came before them, many of whom never made it home at the end of the war.

Battlefield tours such as these are incredibly valuable to the participating Reservists as they not only enable them to honour those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their communities, but they also encourage reflection and discussion on how military operations have evolved throughout history, in turn allowing them to further develop their own skills, not just in combat but in other practical fields such as teamwork, logistics, communication and administering medical aid.

Following on from our recent coverage of The Royal Company of Merchants of the City of Edinburgh signing the Armed Forces Covenant, last Friday we had the pleasure of visiting The Merchants House of Glasgow for its own special signing event.

The Covenant was signed by the Lord Dean of Guild Tony McElroy on behalf of the organisation, and by Honorary Air Commodore of 602 (City of Glasgow) Squadron Charles Berry on behalf of the Ministry of Defence.

Once again we were delighted to be joined by guests from both the business and military worlds, and we would like to thank everyone who came along to what we feel sure was a very enjoyable evening.

Happy Monday everyone!

We’re kicking off the week on a high note as we are very excited to announce this year’s recipients for the Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate of Meritorious Service.

The Lord-Lieutenants’ Awards for Reservists, Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs) and Defence civil servants are recognised as highly prestigious accolades throughout the Armed Forces Community, and are valued immensely by those who receive them as a formal acknowledgement of their outstanding dedication to their units and their wider communities.

We look forward to celebrating with all the recipients, their families and their colleagues during the official awards presentation that will take place in tandem with our Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Silver Awards event on 29 September at the Burrell Collection.
