Summer Mountaineering Course
Last week, 6 students took part in the Summer Mountaineering Foundation Course (SMF) in the Grampians delivered by Sgt Boyd. Over the duration of the 5 days, students learnt the basics of using equipment, route planning, and hiking technique. The importance of pacing and timing was emphasised, especially as a relevant skill for any military environment.
Over the duration of the course, numerous Munros and Cairns were completed, including Cairn Gorm, Sgór Gaoith, and on the final expedition, Lochnagar. The penultimate day led to a night in a bothy before completing the expedition and heading home on Friday. The SMF course is a pre-requisite to the Mountain Leadership Course which builds on the skills learnt in SMF.

Leadership course
At the end of April, 6 students attended the Leadership Foundation Development Programme (LDFP) delivered by Sgt Boyd. This course taught students about leadership and gave an insight into the effectiveness of different leadership styles. The two day course included both theory and practical lessons, and had a focus on the attributes required for specific leadership types.
Leadership skills are incredibly valuable in any role within the Royal Air Force.

Pentland Hills Cross Country
In February, students from UGSAS participated in a cross country route around the Pentland Hills. The route began from the Dreghorn Barracks, and lasted 10km over the muddy and arduous terrain of the Pentland Hills. This was a multi-service event with personnel from other units and regions also taking part.
Although tough, UGSAS did well, with Off Cdt Cash getting a podium finish in 3rd! 👏

This event promotes mental resilience and active wellbeing among personnel.

Annual Formal Dinner 2026
UGSAS recently held their Annual Formal Dinner 2026, at the Glasgow University Union. This annual event is among the most important on the UGSAS calendar. It celebrates success within the squadron, and provides the oppurtunity for students to meet special guests, and UGSAS alumni within the military. This year, AVM Sharrocks was the guest of honour. The evening saw 10 students win prizes for hard work, dedication, and good efforts in various squadron related activities like flying, charity work, and sports.

Always an enjoyable evening with good company and inspiring people.

Sheriffmuir Force Development (FD)
Students recently visited Sheriffmuir to learn about the defence and attack methods used during WW2. Each student delivered a stand, looking at the effectiveness of infiltrating N**i occupied Europe which was defended by the N**i's long spanning Atlantic Wall.
The day brought blue skies and sunshine providing students with the opportunity to enjoy a packed lunch in the sun afterwards.
Overall, an interesting day learning about WW2 defence and attack.

International Forum for Peace
On 20 Mar 26, Off Cdt Doubleday travelled to Palermo, Sicily with 16 other UAS students from across the UK to attend the 6th International Forum for Peace, Security and Prosperity. This was a 3-day event with over 200 young people from 23 different nations. The conference featured panels and workshops led by lecturers from several different military academies from around the world, focusing on topics such as resilience, human trafficking, and emotional intelligence. There was also the opportunity to read academic posters submitted by each of the delegations on various topics, with the delegation from Germany winning the overall poster prize.
Overall this was a great trip, providing excellent opportunities to learn about global affairs in a classroom setting and by talking to other young people from around the world!
This highlights yet another exciting opportunity available on UGSAS.

MOD Chicksands & Bletchley Park Visit
UGSAS students joined UBAS students for force development (FD) to MOD Chicksands and Bletchley Park.
On day one, students visited MOD Chicksands and learnt about the role of intelligence officers and other non-commisioned intelligence roles within the RAF. Students then visited the Military Intelligence Museum which provided an insight into the importance of photographic reconnaissance in defence.
On day two, the students visited Bletchley Park. They were shown the extent of the site's importance during WW2, with figures like Admiral Sir Hugh Sinclair, Alan Turing, and Joan Clarke playing key roles in the development of the park and intelligence gathering during the war. This was a popular part of the FD trip.

Overall, an excellent trip for all involved. Thank you to all who made it possible.

UGSAS / ESUAS Football match
Students from UGSAS, and the East of Scotland University Air Squadron (ESUAS), recently went head to head in the annual football match between the two sister squadrons. The match was held at the Peffermill playing fields in Edinburgh and saw an excellent effort from both sides, however UGSAS came out on top. An outstanding first half from APO Ashworth gave UGSAS 5 goals and although ESUAS tried to pull it back in the second half, the final score was 6-4 to UGSAS.

This annual fixture is always popular and this year the Hadrians trophy was brought back. This hasn't been used for 20 years but will now be used annually in future years.

This sport event promotes teamwork, planning, and good sportsmanship, building related qualities for many roles within the RAF.

Congratulations UGSAS! 👏
