Fancy a new hairdo? Get down to Hair Cut Fashion (part of Fashion Cultures at Merchant City Festival) on Bell St at 6pm.

This project is inspired by the limited menu of hairstyles found in the hairdressing stalls in the markets of North Korea, India, Vietnam and Thailand. These stalls are very basic and consist of a chair, the hairdresser standing knee deep in hair and a queue of people waiting their turn for the chop. Customers pick their style from one of a few bad pictures on the wall. No consultation, no negotiation, no substitutions – just pick the cut, get it done and go. Situated amongst the stalls of the Merchant City Festival, Hair Cut Fashion, will recreate this experience, with the hair cut ‘menu’ taken from drawings by Sophie Macpherson and the cuts undertaken by Leigh Ferguson.

Mairi MacKenzie (programmer and producer of Fashion Cultures 2015) will take guests through the tasting notes for each pairing, and will read an essay from her forthcoming publication, Perfume Was My Hobby about her time as a teenage perfume sales girl in Stranraer.

From Vaseline on the lens to Photoshop, this event will examine the politics of photographic enhancements within advertising from the 1950s to the present day.

Set within The Persistence of Type exhibition at Tramway, Soft Focus responds to the influence of the photographic image and type through primary investigation into local graphic design history - from Post Office records, private archives to collected magazines and micro filmed newspaper.

Focusing on a range of examples, from Tennent’s Lager lovelies to the figure of the airhostess within British Caledonian Airways promotional material, Fiona Jardine discusses the development of photographic manipulation, highlighting key campaigns, which have informed the Persistence of Type exhibition.
