QP coot family update :) Mrs Coot requesting a full head preen canoodle from her beloved! When they each quietly bow and offer their heads to the other whilst remaining so still, it's like a romantic little bonding ritual!

QP big pond cootling update! The two cootlings are doing well and moving into their 'teenager' phase. Their colourful heads have almost disappeared and the white feathers on their chests are starting to appear.

Coot family portrait :) The cootlings are growing well and mum (right) and dad (left) are working so so hard to look after them!

A big shout out of thanks to the gentleman who did a super job helping me with decoy feeding duties tonight! He got a crash course in swan feeding and custody of the food bag (which meant they didn't follow me), so I could get food to the coot family. It meant the little ones got bellies full of mealworms, and all the family could have their post supper preen! A job well done!

QP big pond feeding advice! We have been noticing how much the swans were getting upset by the gulls and ducks, who would descend en masse when a handful of food was thrown to the swans, and the swans would retreat. So we did some tests, and have determined that the smaller the handful and the less obvious the throw (more of a drop than a throw) and the gulls and ducks stay back and do not pounce on the food. At first the swans looked perplexed at the small amounts in front of them, but they quickly cottoned on that this system meant they got the food and no gull or duck aggro.

QP big pond update! All our pond babies are doing well! The coots now have an ingenious protective configuration of sticks over their nest. They've either built this by accident or a good samaritan has been active when the family vacated the nest! Not sure it will survive mum or dad going back to sit on the nest!

QP big pond update! There's a new chick on the pond and its a teeny tiny blinder! We never thought it possible that any other young bird could beat the cuteness of a cootling, until we set eyes on a... baby little grebe! Striped head, fluffy sideburn ears and a face with a conical beak that would fit right into an episode of Pingu! Delighted the little grebes have bred on the big pond for the second year running! (They did hatch two young this year, sadly one was taken by a juvenile large gull. However it does mean the single chick remaining has both parents devoted to fishing for it and protecting it.) You'll need binoculars to see them as they're very tiny shy birds and they stay out in the middle of the pond!

QP big pond tufted duckling update! 🥰 Four big ducklings sunning and preening on a log! They're so big and independent now mama can have a well-deserved break from single parenting and go do her own thang! We love the duckling on the left being so fascinated by all the reflections in the water!
