Just received this lovely message from Erica Henley who is visiting from Australia. This is a fantastic piece of the history of the fountain I am fortunate to share here.

My husband and I visited the Doulton Fountain today from Australia. My husband Kim Henley is the great grandson of Arthur Ernest Pearce, the designer of the Doulton Fountain.

We are indebted to all the women and men who worked to restore the Doulton fountain to its former glory.

We are very proud of the work Arthur designed - not only for Royal Doulton but private art works that are held by family members.

His work can be found in churches, parks, business’s and private collections across UK and Australia.

The Power House Museum in Sydney, Australia hold some of Arthur’s work and there is a tiled freeze that was originally commissioned for the exterior of a building in central Sydney which was relocated some time ago to a beautiful garden in Rookwood cemetery in Sydney.

Once again thank you for your work - some 20 years ago.

Some Facts:

The Fountain was a principal exhibit in the International Exhibition held in Kelvingrove Park in 1888.

It was designed by Arthur Ernest Pearce.

The Fountain was gifted to the city of Glasgow by Sir Henry Doulton in 1890.

It was relocated to Glasgow Green in 1890.

After over 100 year at this location it was dismantled in 1999 to begin the work to restore it to its former glory.

On Monday 9 May 2005 Lord Provost Liz Cameron turned on the fountain to mark the completion of the restoration and relocation to its new home in front of the People's Palace.

Many old images of the Doulton Fountain were also required to help with the detail that had to be replicated on many of the statues contained within the fountain as well as other sections that required to be worked in to restore it to its original condition.

Here are a few of those photos
