With rockets continuing to fall, and unrest on the streets of Israel and the Occupied Territories, we at GPZF are no less committed as Zionists both to our support of Israel and our view that the need for a swift and fair peace with the Palestinians is being ignored by the current Israeli leadership. The many issues of leadership (and absence of leadership) on the side of the Palestinians does not give cause to cheer on Israel in making their lives harder. Neither the Palestinians nor Israelis are leaving the land and the journey to peace must start from where we are now.

The proof of this is the current situation. It gives us no pleasure to see that our concerns that the current Israeli Prime Minister’s years of wedge-driving within Israeli society, and restrictions on Palestinian lives while supporting expansion of settlements, has both spilled over into the streets and not made Israel more secure.

Expressing this view as a Zionist in the diaspora may feel difficult so we suggest you consider expressing it through Israel. In the comments we have links to the donation pages for New Israel Fund and ALLMEP, both of whom are active in seeking change and supporting others in doing so. We also have a link to an organisation that both work with - Omdim B’Yachad (Standing Together) – that is organising Jews and Arabs in vigils for peace and co-existence throughout Israel. If you wish to suggest other charities or groups, please add them in the comments.

If you do wish to show your public support for Israel, such as at today’s Board of Deputies on-line event, you may wish to consider preparing your own message to display but we also provide a link to Standing Together’s posters in Hebrew and Arabic which express the need for coexistence.

We join you in hoping for an end to current hostilities, and a start to meaningful steps towards a fair and just resolution. Doing the same thing over and over is not going to work, and that includes tolerating empty support for peace without calling on Israel to do something different to bring it about.
