Last week our archivist Ingrid Thomson had the pleasure of welcoming Orkney historian Sheena Wenham to Glamis Castle 🏰✨

Sheena is the author of “Flo, a Young Victorian Lady & her visit to Orkney in 1866”, which draws on family diaries and journals to bring Victorian Orkney to life through the eyes of Flo Graeme. Flo was a close friend of the 13th Earl and Countess of Strathmore, and her story includes links to Glamis Castle during this period.

Through her research, Sheena kindly shared images from Flo Graeme’s collection, including a group photograph of Glamis servants taken in front of the Castle’s main entrance in 1866, along with portraits of individual staff members, including the Housekeeper and servants Annie and Sarah. It is particularly interesting that individual photographs of servants were taken at this time; in the early days of photography, this may have reflected a search for willing subjects, but it also suggests a sense of respect and familiarity, with servants viewed as an important part of the household. These images have been a valuable addition to our archives and have helped identify previously unnamed individuals in our Strathmore family photograph albums.

The timing of this discovery is especially fitting, as our current “Behind the Seams at Glamis” exhibition continues to explore the stories of both the Strathmore family and their servants through clothing, accessories and archival material spanning centuries of the Castle’s history.
