Recruitment Update ππ§βππ§βππ§βππ§βππ§βππ§βππ
Eighteen months ago, Frome Fire Station launched a recruitment campaign to attract and recruit new on-call firefighters, helping to strengthen operational resilience within the station and support the wider community.
Since the campaign began, significant efforts have been made to engage with local residents through community events, advertising, social media campaigns, and a dedicated recruitment open day. These activities have helped raise awareness of the on-call firefighter role and the vital service it provides to the people of Frome.
As a result of the campaign, six new recruits have successfully completed the selection process, finished their initial training, and are now operational. This equates to an average of one successful recruit every three months. Although one of these individuals has since transferred to another fire station, meaning Frome no longer directly benefits from their availability, the wider Service and community continue to benefit from their contribution.
The campaign has strengthened the station's operational capacity and improved appliance availability. In addition, there are currently four applicants progressing through the recruitment process at various stages. However, recruitment remains an ongoing priority, and the station continues to actively seek individuals who live or work within five minutes of the station and can respond promptly to emergency incidents.
While good progress has been made, challenges remain in attracting and retaining suitable candidates. The commitment required of on-call firefighters, together with the availability of local employers willing to support staff in undertaking the role, continues to present difficulties. Over the course of the campaign, 38 applications have been received. Of these, 18 applicants withdrew during the process, 10 were unsuccessful, and six have successfully reached operational status, with four applicants currently progressing through the recruitment pipeline.
The station will therefore continue its engagement and recruitment activities to ensure a sustainable level of firefighter availability for the future.
Overall, the recruitment campaign has delivered positive results, increasing firefighter numbers and enhancing operational resilience. Ongoing efforts will focus on building on this success to further strengthen the station's workforce and its ability to serve the local community effectively.
