The final round of the Kick Start Fund is now open, and we're keen to hear from people, groups and organisations with new ideas that could make a difference in West Cumbria.

Kick Start is not intended to fund existing projects or ongoing core activities. The fund is designed to help local people turn a new idea into action, pilot something different, test an approach, or introduce an activity that is not currently being delivered in the community.

Grants available:

Up to ÂŁ500 for individuals and informal groups
Up to ÂŁ1,000 for constituted groups and organisations
We're particularly looking for ideas that support:

Health and wellbeing
Activities for young people
Skills, training and employment opportunities
If you're working with individuals, young people, families, community groups or organisations who have a great idea but may struggle to access funding elsewhere, please encourage them to get in touch. We can provide support with developing ideas and completing applications.

Application deadline: 30 September 2026.

A temporary road closure has been put in place to allow Fibrus to carry out utility works which are expected to commence 6th July 2026 and anticipated to take 5 days to complete.

Location: U4029 Croasdale, from a point approx. 1km north east of its junction with the U4028, extending in a north easterly direction for approx. 580m.

Alternative Route: via the unrestricted section of the U4029, U4027, Cauda Brow, U4026, C4004, Kirkland Road, and U4028 and a way for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times.

A section of the C4004, Calder Bridge will be closed whilst highway works are carried out by Cumberland Council Highways Service. This is anticipated to take up to 9 hours to complete.

C4004, Calder Bridge, from its junction with the A595, extending in a north easterly direction to its junction with the U4042.

âš  Alternative Route:
A suitable alternative route for vehicles will be signed and available via the unrestricted section of the C4004, C4016 Wilton and the A595, Thornhill.

🚲 A way for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times.

🚨 Emergency Services:
Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained where required for the duration of this restriction.

A new fund to support eligible households who are struggling with the cost of heating oil has today (Wednesday 1 April) been launched in Cumberland.

The price of kerosene – the fuel used for heating oil - has been especially affected by the recent conflict in the Middle East and has risen faster than other fuels such as petrol and gas.

The Government recently announced a targeted support package for low-income families which is to be distributed by local councils.

We can now confirm that its Heating Oil Support Fund is open for applications from eligible low‑income households who use heating oil as their primary source of heating. Cumberland’s share of the national support package is £370,000.
