Three months after first opening its doors to patients, the Slough Community Diagnostics Centre (CDC) is helping more than 300 patients a day (more than 2,000 patients a week) get quicker access to vital tests and diagnoses.
Since opening in March, the CDC has been open 8am - 8pm seven days a week, bringing care closer to home and reducing waiting times for those in the surrounding communities. On average 2,200 patients a week have been seen at the centre, either for diagnostic tests or to attend one of the specialist clinics.
Alex Pordage, CDC Operations Manager, Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust said: "We’ve made good progress in the first three months, supporting thousands of patients to get diagnosed more quickly. However, we still do have capacity at Slough CDC - particularly for blood tests and walk-in x-rays. The wait time is minimal for these services and there are often slots available on the same day as the GP referral. Patients can simply request Slough CDC to their GP when being referred, or in the case of blood test, choose it as an option when booking electronically.”
Services currently offered at Slough CDC include blood tests, CT, MRI, ultrasound, X ray, lung function tests and sleep apnoea tests. The centre also recently introduced a paediatric blood testing service for children and young people aged five and above and a second MRI machine has been up and running since the beginning June, expanding capacity to offer more MRI scanning for patients in the area.
At full capacity, Slough CDC will deliver up to 150,000 additional tests each year and is also exploring introducing other specialist cardiology and respiratory clinics to address the specific health care needs of the local communities.
