Three months after first opening its doors to patients, the Slough Community Diagnostics Centre (CDC) is helping more than 300 patients a day (more than 2,000 patients a week) get quicker access to vital tests and diagnoses.

Since opening in March, the CDC has been open 8am - 8pm seven days a week, bringing care closer to home and reducing waiting times for those in the surrounding communities. On average 2,200 patients a week have been seen at the centre, either for diagnostic tests or to attend one of the specialist clinics.

Alex Pordage, CDC Operations Manager, Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust said: "We’ve made good progress in the first three months, supporting thousands of patients to get diagnosed more quickly. However, we still do have capacity at Slough CDC - particularly for blood tests and walk-in x-rays. The wait time is minimal for these services and there are often slots available on the same day as the GP referral. Patients can simply request Slough CDC to their GP when being referred, or in the case of blood test, choose it as an option when booking electronically.”

Services currently offered at Slough CDC include blood tests, CT, MRI, ultrasound, X ray, lung function tests and sleep apnoea tests. The centre also recently introduced a paediatric blood testing service for children and young people aged five and above and a second MRI machine has been up and running since the beginning June, expanding capacity to offer more MRI scanning for patients in the area.

At full capacity, Slough CDC will deliver up to 150,000 additional tests each year and is also exploring introducing other specialist cardiology and respiratory clinics to address the specific health care needs of the local communities.

Last year we launched our FHFT 2030 Strategy, aligned with national NHS priorities and Integrated Care Systems (ICS). It set out a five-year plan to transform healthcare, improve patient outcomes, support colleagues, and modernise services.

At the heart of FHFT 2030 are four strategic objectives: Highly Satisfied Patients, Excellent Quality, Engaged People and Modern Infrastructure. Together, these priorities guide our work to deliver better outcomes for both patients and staff, as highlighted in this short film.

One year on and we have a lot to be proud of:

We reduced the number of patients waiting for treatment by 23,000, improved our 18-week referral-to-treatment by 11 percent and are treating more patients in under 4 hours in our Emergency Departments than previous years. We also opened our Slough Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) which can provide up to 150,000 additional tests each year for our community – helping to speed up diagnoses. At Frimley Park, we transformed our Medical Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) to help support our Emergency Department and help treat patients without the need for a hospital admission. At Heatherwood Hospital we successfully delivered a Hub Optimisation Week to help reduce elective waiting times.

We also begun designing a new aseptic suite at Wexham Park to strengthen our local cancer services, adopted new water safe practices at Wexham ITU, and are expanding our research and innovation capabilities.

Across our sites we have started upgrading our hospital entrances and are preparing to install Automatic Number Plate Recognition systems to make parking quicker, easier and more convenient for patients.

We are proud to have achieved Good and Outstanding CQC ratings at our hospitals, and we are continuing to reduce our environmental impact through LED lighting upgrades and solar panel installations following government ‘green’ grants.

Our digital teams have worked hard to upgrade our systems to Windows 11, upgraded our WiFi at all sites and are working on integrating the national NHS app with our MyFrimleyHealth Record app to improve our patients’ experience of our services.

For our staff we have strengthened the early support and induction process for new starters, invested in wellbeing and development and enhanced our approach to equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) which includes introducing new accessibility resources for the trust. We have also refreshed our recognition programme and updated our clinical, digital, people, property and sustainability strategies – to ensure that we are working as efficiently and effectively as possible.

Thank you to all our staff for your continued hard work – it is seen and valued. Together, we are building a trust that is compassionate, effective, and modern in everything we do.

New heart scan service launches at Frimley:

Frimley Park Hospital has launched a new Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging (CMR) service, providing advanced cardiac imaging for patients across the local area.

Previously, many patients requiring specialist heart MRI scans had to travel to other centres. The new service now enables patients to access state of the art cardiac imaging closer to home. A cardiac MRI is a safe and non-invasive scan of the heart and blood vessels, used to look at the structure and function of the heart. It is a highly specialist test which supports the diagnosis and management of a wide range of conditions including congenital heart disease, cardiomyopathies, heart valve diseases and to assess the extent of any previous damage to the heart.

Dr Senan Alsanjari, Consultant Cardiac Radiologist, Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust said: “The launch of our new Cardiac MRI service marks an important step forward for our cardiac imaging at Frimley Park Hospital. We now have two dedicated cardiovascular MRI scanners at the Frimley Park site, and expect to initially scan around 16 patients each week, with each scan taking between 45 minutes to one hour to complete. Providing this service locally is more convenient for patients, enhances our diagnostic capability across the trust and will reduce waiting times for specialist cardiac imaging."

The new service forms part of Frimley Health's continued investment in diagnostic services and aims to improve access to high quality cardiovascular care for local communities.

gives us a chance to highlight our incredible volunteers who give so much of their time to support our patients, staff and visitors. This team of blue tops make a huge contribution to the health and wellbeing of our communities, giving their time, skills and expertise freely each year to support the NHS. At Frimley Health, we have a professional, committed and enthusiastic team of over 750 valued volunteers working across many of our sites.

Each volunteer works diligently to enhance and improve the patient experience at Frimley Health. Whether it’s offering a reassuring presence, a conversation at a bedside, a lift onboard the patient buggy, or something as simple as a cup of tea, these moments of care make a lasting difference. Our volunteers provide welcome support to many departments in and around the trust, and every single one of them makes a positive difference to all who walk through our doors.

A patient recently shared what a volunteer visit meant to them during their stay:

"I received a visit from two lovely ladies who volunteer for hospital visits. They were Jackie and Pam and we had a lovely chat about all sorts of life events which cheered my day up. Thank you for providing such a wonderful service to patients during their stay in hospital and I’m sure that the reward goes both ways."

Frimley Health Charity bookshop was officially opened in its new location, Frimley Park Hospital, first floor, Yellow Street next to F9 recently.

Bryan Ingleby, Chair of the trust, cut the ribbon to mark the bookshop's official opening. He was joined by our bookshop volunteers including Marion and Chris, our champions of the bookshop, as well as voluntary services leadership. Nabin Gurun and Gary White from capital projects, who worked brilliantly to create the new location, also attended along with colleagues.

Bryan said: "The bookshop is part of the beating heart of Frimley Park. It has made a huge pastoral and financial contribution to the trust over 20 years. In recent years it has contributed to the purchase of the volunteer buggy and new wheelchairs, and brings in an average of £15k to the trust each year, so we are very happy the bookshop has been able to move to its new location."

Founded and run by volunteers the bookshop has a wide selection of fiction and non-fiction books for adults, children and young people. It now takes cash as well as card payments, so come along and see what it has to offer.

Orthoptists are specialists in the assessment of visual function, particularly in children, individuals with special educational needs, and those with communication difficulties caused by conditions such as stroke. They are experts in binocular vision - how the eyes work together and in understanding the effects of neurological impairments on vision.

Orthoptists assess, diagnose, monitor, and manage a wide range of visual disorders. These include conditions such as strabismus (squint) and amblyopia (lazy eye), as well as more complex issues like cranial nerve palsies. They are also involved in various specialist services, including glaucoma clinics, laser treatment clinics, low vision services, and the administration of eye injections.

Orthoptists provide care for patients across the entire lifespan, from infants to older adults.

Thank you to our orthoptists and the vital role you play in eye health, supporting patients and strengthening ophthalmic care worldwide 👁️💙

Frimley Health has launched a new 'Patient Information Library' on our website in the patients and visitors section bringing patient information together in one central place. It has been designed to make health information easier to find, access and share.

Patient information plays an important role in helping people understand their care, treatment and choices and the new patient information library allows patients and carers to access information online and use the accessibility tools available on the trust website. This means patients and carers can view information in a way that better meets their individual communication needs.

These tools can support people to:

- translate information into different languages
- increase or reduce text size
- change colour contrast
- use dyslexia-friendly font settings
- access information in a more flexible way
- use read aloud technology

The aim is to support patients and carers before, during and after their care, while also helping staff to share clear, consistent and up-to-date information.

Special thanks the teams who made this possible and to Frimley Health Charity for supporting the project and sharing the vision for continuous improvement in patient care.

A blessed Eid al-Adha to all of our Muslim colleagues, patients and our local communities, wishing happiness and peace to all who celebrate the occasion.

Eid al‑Adha, also known as the Day of Sacrifice, is one of the most important festivals in the Islamic calendar and this special time of year reminds us of compassion, generosity and the importance of supporting one another.

As an inclusive Trust, we recognise and celebrate a wide range of cultural and religious events throughout the year, including other major celebrations and events as part of our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion calendar, which aims to celebrate the richness and diversity within our hospitals, communities and local populations.
