This week Mallaig High School pupils enjoyed a visit to their local Fire Station for a careers talk. The fire-fighters answered lots of tough questions and gave many demonstrations surrounding the truck, first aid, "jaws of life" and even let the pupils take turns with the emergency water pump system.

DYW, SDS and Lochaber High School were proud to host a very successful Careers Fair last week. With over 50 local employers participating, the day was packed with inspiration, hands‑on activities and real conversations about future pathways.

Huge appreciation to the amazing companies who show up year after year - and a warm welcome to the exciting new faces who brought fresh opportunities to explore.

The energy in the room was fantastic, with students enjoying a high level of interaction with activities at many of the tables. It was clear just how valuable the day was for helping them explore their next steps - a brilliant day of discovery, ambition and community collaboration.

STEM fun at Kilchuimen

A big thank you to BAM Nuttall for delivering a great STEM workshop with the P1–P7 pupils at Kilchuimen Primary.

The challenge was to work together to build a giant tetrahedron, putting their STEM skills to the test along the way.

There was lots of teamwork, communication, and problem-solving going on.

It was also great to see the senior pupils supporting and helping the primary pupils with the challenge.

A great day of learning, building and working together. Thanks to Angus from BAM for visiting us and giving our pupils such a fun and hands-on STEM experience!

Thanks to lochaberfisheriestrust for a fantastic session to Lochaber High students. We learnt about monitoring invertebrates to check the health of the river, and spent time kick sampling and rock scraping to see species.
After this we saw a demo on electro fishing, and learned how young salmon and trout can be identified and checked for recording.
We also heard from the Lochaber Fisheries Trust employees how their career paths developed, and the many options into practical, lab based and report based employment options.

This year, staff from Lochaber Leisure Centre and High Life Highland are sharing their career journeys, the choices they've made, and the ambitions they've pursued. Their stories show that many people don't have their careers mapped out from the start. Career paths can take unexpected turns, and it's perfectly okay to change your mind along the way - exploring different opportunities is both valuable and healthy.

Five S3–S4 pupils from Kilchuimen recently took part in the Lantra Scotland 13–15 Year Old Tractor Driving course, delivered by Ringlink Scotland Ltd.

Throughout the course, pupils learned how to carry out pre-start safety checks, operate a tractor safely, manoeuvre with confidence, and tow a trailer, while gaining an understanding of health and safety and good practice when working in an agricultural environment.

A huge thank you to Glenmoriston Estate for hosting the training and for their generous support in providing two tractors and trailers for the course. Opportunities like this give young people the chance to develop practical, industry-recognised skills and gain a real insight into careers in agriculture.

Well done to all five pupils for embracing the challenge!

This week pupils from Plockton High School and Portree High School had a fantastic time with Stagecoach North Scotland Open Days! They brought along one of their buses to give students a hands-on, behind-the-scenes look at the transport industry, with a special focus on their incredible engineering careers.

The pupils got to climb into the cab, sit in the driver’s seat to see the world from a completely different angle, and even inspect the engine up close. Their team loved answering all the pupil's sharp questions about apprenticeships and high-tech mechanics.

A huge thank you to Stagecoach North Scotland. The future of engineering in the Highlands looks incredibly bright!

Thanks to employers Mowi Scotland, Shiel Buses, TSL Contractors and Nevis Range for hosting presentations and providing student engagement activities for the DYW West - Developing the Young Workforce and Lochaber High Business Enterprise Day.

This week we welcomed Omexom to Kilchuimen Theydelivered engaging presentations to both the P4–7 class and the Academy.

Students learned more about the work Omexom does and explored the wide variety of roles and career pathways available within the company. It was a great opportunity to gain an insight into the skills, qualifications, and opportunities available within the energy and engineering sector.

Following the presentations, students took part in a STEM challenge using STEM kits, one group managed to build a working radio!
