Burgie Arboretum and Glasshouse Restoration Project

Burgie Arboretum and Glasshouse Restoration Project Helping Hamish is about bringing people together to learn about trees and to care for the land that The Burgie Arboretum is now open to the public!

Please feel free to visit during daylight hours and enjoy the budding woodland, and the blooming spring flowers. An endeavour is underway to restore the Edwardian-era glasshouse in the gardens, which is where the saplings grow up before being planted out. It's a beautiful old building, but in need of conservation, including new glass. Please consider helping the endeavour by funding a pane of glas

Hamish, the owner is a shining beacon of humanity against the backdrop of turmoil we find ourselves living in today. He represents the mindful, who choose to direct their energy towards the betterment of our world and those who live in it. His goal is simply to protect and beautify an old Scottish estate, sustaining it for today and future generations and to help others reconnect with the living environment by sharing a hands-on experience in arboriculture - working with trees. With little more than love and a prayer, Hamish tirelessly hand-selects and starts from seed, thousands of trees from every corner of the world. Now, at 72, Hamish’s vision outreaches to a host of global volunteers. Like Hamish himself, the elderly yet beautiful greenhouse perpetually keeps the project going through all types of weather. Unfortunately, every building has a tipping point in terms of upkeep. There is motivation to help save this greenhouse from further decay so that the progress of Hamish's vision may continue. As with anything that is this old, it is imperative that the necessary care be started before the point of no return for the structure is reached. You may ask yourself, “Why should this be important to me and to us all?” To this there are the words of naturalist John Muir, ““Between every two pines is a doorway to a new world.” Please join in becoming a Hamish’s Helper and partake in the fostering of trees and caretaking of this period greenhouse so that it might continue to offer shelter to young seedlings. Be part of the solution and join other caring fellows who can also see the good in Hamish’s project. Once you have looked through the posted pictures please use the Learn More button and donate through the Go Fund Me site. If you want to actively participate in the restoration, please go to www.adventuresinpreservation.com to look for the developments on joining the restoration team in Scotland. Become a Hamish's Helper too. The best gift you will receive is the eternal thanks of all who come and see the trees.

Read about some of the exciting discoveries our volunteers made at the glasshouse in June, as described by one of our project coordinators, Steffi Weinraub!

In June, eighteen intrepid volunteers traveled to Scotland to help conserve a 1912 timber glasshouse on the ancient Burgie Estate. The task was not easy, but it seemed straightforward: Repair and c…

Day 12: The more you dig the more you find! Some sleuthing by our volunteers unearthed evidence of original paint layers - particularly red and green decoration - and some bricks with makers marks! Samples were taken for analysis before final colours are decided, and the bricks are a great clue for dating the structure!

Day 6: Big day here - new arrivals have swelled our group to EIGHTEEN volunteers, and we've taken over the manor house for the week! Not bad digs, but it does feel odd to sit down at the grand dining room in our work gear...!

Day 5: Bit of sightseeing this morning while the weather kept the timber too wet to paint - Johnstons Woolen Mill and 13th century Pluscarden Abbey! Then a few eager beavers returned to site and kept at it until we were treated to a glorious sunset, and it was time to down tools :)
