FCW - Finavon Castle Water - is one of the most attractive fisheries on a medium size salmon and sea trout river anywhere in Scotland. Its principal attraction is that throughout its 2.7 miles of double bank fishing the river environment is wooded, mainly with indigenous species of trees. There are access tracks, car parks and fishing huts on each of the four beats. FCW averages about 100 salmon and 105 sea trout over the last five years, which makes it a reliable fishery in terms of catches. The best of the salmon fishing is in the spring and the autumn with sea trout fishing at its best in June and July. FCW prices are competitive and it's website www.finavoncastlefishing.co.uk is widely regarded as one of the most informative and helpful salmon fishing websites in Scotland. Accommodation in the Finavon area ranges from B&Bs and hotels to self catering cottages. Details can be obtained by contacting Tony Andrews 07748 634 658. The Angus countryside is outstandingly beautiful with mountains and glens nearby, a historic coastline with fabulous beaches and a huge range of tourist attractions, including some of Scotland's most famous castles and gardens, golf courses and great shopping and attractions for the whole family that the rapidly developing city of Dundee has to offer, not to mention St Andrews and Royal Deeside - all within easy range of Finavon. It is worth coming here to fish and to enjoy this unknown part of Scotland. You will want to come back!
I have fished the River South Esk for more than 40 years and I confess to being hopelessly in love with our fickle little river, sometimes productive, but always beautiful, interesting and alluring. The things I love most about the river and its surroundings are the surprises it can provide in terms of catches, and the ever present wildlife - ospreys, otters, roedeer, dippers, kingfishers and red squirrels - and the list continues for many more pages.
The size of some of our salmon stretches the imagination of those who wonder how such a relatively small stream can produce such monstrous fish. A 59lbs salmon caught at Kinnaird in 1922. A 45 lbs salmon caught in the upper river at Crossbog Farm on the Kirriemuir Angling Club water in the 1970s. Every year we see big fish and opccasionally catch one of over 30lbs. Every year I lie quietly on top of the Haughs Aqueduct and watch through the gin clear water as spring salmon take up their lies in readiness for the long wait for the cooler waters of the autumn, when they will spawn in the upper river.
And then there are the wonderful runs of sea trout to consider. Long summer nights - just twilight really - and swirling, splashing and torpedoing sea trout putting noise and confusion into the still summer’s night. Catching sea trout at night on the fly is a very special experience. Addictive for sure.
