Folca 2 plans are moving forward ⏩

An application aimed at preparing it to become an active mixed-used building with commercial units and a medical centre has now been submitted.

Bringing the Art Deco section of the former Folkestone department store in Folkestone back to life is a real priority for us, so this is a major milestone.

Subject to NHS approvals, two GP practices will occupy the upper floors – accessible by the original central staircase and two new passenger lifts – while retail and commercial tenants will be located on the ground and basement levels.

A series of accessibility, energy efficiency and heritage improvements are included in the application, which can be viewed and commented on by the local planning authority’s portal.

Thanks to the swift response of our dedicated tree team, the site was quickly secured and made safe 🌳

Whilst regular inspections of all our trees are undertaken annually to identify significant defects and foreseeable risks of tree or branch failure, tree safety cannot be guaranteed.

Trees and shrubs are living organisms whose structural stability can change over time, sometimes rapidly and without any external indication, as was the case in this instance.

Unfortunately, there are occasions where trees do fail so our highly skilled and responsive tree team will attend the site and make the area safe.

Our work revolves around risk reduction and the proactive maintenance of the district's tree stock, which thankfully helps to significantly reduce incidents such as the one we dealt with at St Eanswythe's.

Who’s noticed the wonky bench? 🤔

🙏 Nope, we didn’t get it wrong. Turns out it’s not wonky at all!

Sandgate Road is an incline, the bench is flat and we’ve created a mind-bending optical illusion 😂

So next time you’re seeing someone in town why not meet at the wonky bench ™️

A message from council leader, Cllr Jim Martin about supporting the fund-raising by the district’s Nepalese community for the many thousands affected by the catastrophic flash floods on the Nepal-Tibet border.

“We are sure that everyone is aware of the terrible disaster that has occurred in Nepal. The slipping of the glacier and the consequent flood have killed many, with many others currently missing.

“In Folkestone we are very proud partners of our Nepalese community and are very grateful for having the regimental home of the Gurkhas within our district. We are very fortunate that so many Nepalese people have chosen to make their lives within our shared community.

“I’ve been asked by fellow local councillors wanting to know how they should channel funds, because many of the residents in Folkestone & Hythe are so generous and willing to help those in need.

"So, with that in mind and our established link between that community – a fundraising appeal has been launched by the Folkestone Nepalese Community Centre to collect donations that will be channelled directly to flood relief and to help many of the victims involved.

“All our prayers and hopes are with the people of Nepal. We thank residents for their support.”
