Fire Incidents in Essex Are Rising- Here’s How to Protect Your Property and People

Recent data from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service reveals a concerning trend: fire incidents increased significantly throughout 2025, with deliberate fires doubling in some months.

In May 2025, Essex recorded 490 total fires- a 74% increase compared to the previous year and 35% above the five-year average. Deliberate fires were particularly problematic, with 168 incidents representing a 102% year-on-year increase. By October 2025, the county saw 341 fire incidents, 35% higher than October 2024.

Basildon, Harlow, Colchester, Clacton, and Grays experienced the highest concentrations of deliberate fires, predominantly involving loose refuse, grassland, and park areas.

In May 2025 alone, ECFRS issued 51 Notices of Deficiencies and managed 7 active Prohibition Notices. Regular inspection of fire doors, compartmentation, and fire-stopping around penetrations prevents costly compliance issues and protects lives.
