Someone asked me… What does my role as an Armed Forces Champion do…
An Armed Forces Champion serves as a key advocate and support point for current and former military personnel, their families, and the wider armed forces community within an organisation or local area. The role focuses on promoting understanding, coordinating support, and ensuring that the needs of serving members, veterans, and their families are recognised and addressed across areas such as employment, healthcare, welfare, and policy.
Key Responsibilities:
• Advocacy and Representation: Championing the interests of the armed forces community and ensuring their voices are heard at strategic and decision-making levels.
• Support Coordination: Helping service personnel, veterans, and their families access appropriate support, working closely with partner agencies, charities, and service providers.
• Policy and Strategy: Supporting the development and delivery of policies and strategies that uphold the Armed Forces Covenant and embed armed forces considerations into broader organisational or community plans.
• Awareness and Engagement: Raising awareness of the contributions made by service members and veterans, building stronger relationships, and supporting their transition and integration into civilian life.
• Role Modelling and Guidance: Acting as a positive role model and approachable point of contact, offering a listening ear for colleagues, reservists, and veterans who may need advice or support.
• Organisational Support: Assisting the organisation in achieving and maintaining accreditations such as the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme, and promoting best practice.
• Training and Development: Undertaking relevant training to strengthen understanding of the armed forces community and to provide informed guidance and support.
