🛟Last nights Tuesday crew training for our RNLI Fleetwood volunteer all-weather lifeboat crew was once again under the command of visting Coxswain Tom Stuart from Lytham St Annes RNLI and our stations trainee Coxswain Jonathan Davies.
Our stations All-weather Shannon class lifeboat 13-14 'Kenneth James Pierpont' is a little bit smaller than the larger Cunard cruise ship 'Queen Anne' Jonathan usually drives in his day job, but he managed to handle her well.

The evenings training was some emergency procedures with man overboard, anchoring and a navigation exercise. Working towards Jonathans upcoming Coxswains pass-out.

When RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew vist other lifeboat stations for training, this helps our volunteer lifeboat crews work with our flank stations, building up a working relationship leaning how each other work and building on our One Crew team work.

Congratulations goes to new volunteer crew member Ben Walsh.
Ben received his page from our stations Lifeboat Operations Manager Andy Willson, at the end of last nights training, after completing the next step in his training, now allowing him to go to sea on callouts.

It seems like you go forever without a shout, but when things get busy, they get busy! Last night saw our RNLI All-Weather Lifeboat Kenneth James Pierpoint off Blackpool, assisting a fishing boat whose propeller had become fouled.
Our volunteers were already training when the call came in, so with a relief Coxswain from Lytham we were able to launch the boat and head to the casualty vessel in quick order. Blackpool also provided support as an assessment carried out at the scene indicated the need to tow the vessel to safety.
The initial tow was able to move the fishing vessel, relative to her nets allowing volunteer Bunny Blundell (who has commercial fishing experience) to assist the crew with getting as much of them aboard as possible, making the tow considerably easier and safer for all concerned. Fleetwood’s lifeboat then towed the casualty vessel to safe harbour in Fleetwood, where mooring procedures were assisted by our Inshore lifeboat, Harbet.
This was a great example of how different Lifeboat Stations work together to save lives at sea, and we’d like to thank our colleagues from Lytham St Annes RNLI and RNLI Blackpool for giving up their time to support this shout.

🛟Are You Heading To The Coast This Bank Holiday Holiday Weekend?

With warmer weather forcast, many people are heading down to beaches to enjoy the sun. Whether you’re sunbathing swimming or taking to the water it’s important to always prioritise your safety. Here are some important tips to help keep you safe whilst visiting any coastline.

●Check the tide times and weather before heading out.

●Always try to visit a lifeguarded beach – If you can’t make it to a lifeguarded beach, learn more about your chosen beach and read local signs

●Swim between the red and yellow flags – This zone is where it is safe to swim and where the lifeguards are watching

●Check the local beach warning signs that point out specific dangers at each location, and ask for local advice.

●Take a photograph on your mobile phone of your children when you arrive at the beach, so if they become lost you can show the emergency services and they then know who they are looking for.

●Always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.

●If you are going out on the open water aways wear a PFD (Personal Flotation Device - lifejacket or buoyancy aid)

●Always carry a means of calling for help.

● If you see someone in trouble,
call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Don't risk becoming a casualty yourself.

● The sandbanks around the Fleetwood area can be dangerous! The Gullies on Fleetwood beach start to rapidly fill up approximately 1hr after low tide and
and the sandbanks begin to cover with the incoming tide approximately 3 hours before it reaches its highest point, cutting off raised areas with little to no warning, the tide can come in behind you without you being aware that it is coming in.

If you are unsure of when the tide comes in or which direction the tide comes in from, please do not walk out on the sands.

●Float to Live – If you find yourself in the water unexpectedly. When you feel you can, call for help or swim to safety.

●Local tide times can be found at various locations along the coast, along with local safety signage.
