Fernhurst Furnace

Fernhurst Furnace The remains of Fernhurst Furnace, also known as North Park Furnace, are some of the best preserved in the Sussex Weald.

The iron industry flourished here in the 17th and 18th centuries using local ore, charcoal and water power. The untouched nature of the site and the rural surrounding belie the production of cast iron, tools and cannon which was effectively the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Even though there are many ‘hammer/furnace’ ponds throughout East and West Sussex, many people know little about the great historical and social importance of this bygone industry.

Huge thanks to everyone who came to support us this weekend.

We’ve had a great time telling the story of the furnace and showcasing the archaeology. Your help raising charitable funds means we can carry on preserving this place for future generations; every beer you drank, cake munched and your attempts at Aunt Sally, all made direct contributions.

Visitors, volunteers, exhibitors - a huge team effort. Many thanks indeed.

(Photos and visitors to follow).

If you took any photos, we’d love to see them. You can send a link to: [email protected]

We’re open tomorrow from 10:30.

Your chance to experience living history, witness cannon firing and an opportunity to learn about Fernhurst’s hidden history.

Exclusive to this weekend: once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see a significant recent discovery, before it’s buried again.

Join us in the field (and the woods) for a roast lamb lunch, bacon sandwiches, veggie food options and cake. Our woodland pub will be open all day (beer from Langham’s).

See you tomorrow.

Looking forward to seeing more visitors tomorrow.
