🌊 Breaking: Tidal Reversal Trial 🌊
Due to ongoing coastal erosion concerns, a temporary tidal reversal trial will take place today between 12:00–14:00.
During this time, the tide will come IN from both directions simultaneously.
We advise all beach users to remain alert and avoid standing “in the middle bit.”
Our teams will be on hand to monitor the situation.

Did you know that HM Coastguard has seven all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) deployed in specific locations around the UK to support search and rescue operations?

The ATVs, which are also utility task vehicles (UTVs), provide additional specialist search and rescue capability on islands with reduced infrastructure where the terrain may present operational difficulties.

They can also be mobilised in areas with large expanses of beach and dunes for the same reason.

As a four-wheel drive vehicle with a 686cc engine, independent double wishbone suspension, and a small load bed capable of carrying up to 270kg, the ATV is perfect for when coastguard rescue vehicles with 4x4 capability are unsuitable and a smaller, nimbler vehicle is required.

Coastguard rescue teams with ATVs:

• St Martin's, Isles of Scilly
• Tresco, Isles of Scilly
• Lundy Island, Bristol Channel
• Wells, Norfolk
• Isle of Gigha, Argyll and Bute
• Colonsay, Inner Hebrides
• Stornoway, Outer Hebrides

ATVs are also deployed to support local, regional, and national responses as necessary, with two additional ATVs available for deployment as part of HM Coastguard's national counter pollution response.

We’d like to remind everyone that flares should only be used in genuine distress situations. They shouldn’t be used for entertainment or as fireworks during celebrations.

If we receive an alert at or near the coast where a flare has been launched, we will always respond and won’t know the difference if you are using them as fireworks. This can tie up resources when they're not needed, putting our coastguard rescue teams at unnecessary risk and potentially diverting them from a legitimate emergency.

If you think someone could be in trouble at the coast, always call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

*** CALLOUT ***

Team paged early this morning and following a call for assistance.

An elderly gentleman was exercising his animals when one became stuck in mud. Usually we do not get involved in animal rescue, however the gentleman implied that he was going to attempt a rescue himself so the team was deployed.

The animal was soon released, given a plate of carrots, and after a couple of photos he went on his way.

He asked us to pass a message to you. He wishes you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. He also said that he would see you later if you have been good. After he had gone we located his driving licence on the beach which will be posted later.
