We had a fantastic first day at the Suffolk Show (Official) and welcomed lots of visitors to learn more about what we do at Port Health. We also had the pleasure of welcoming members of the East Suffolk Council Environmental Protection team to our stand who were talking about their responsible Dog Ownership Campaign.

Visitors have been enjoying a virtual tour of our facilities using our VR headset, created in partnership with Suffolk New College. A huge thank you to Nigel Champion for bringing this to life, and to Alan Pease for stopping by to talk with us about being industry partners with Suffolk New College and sharing our experience of developing the VR headset software.

Guests have also been able to try their luck on our hook-a-duck game, explore our mock consignment containers, discover the products we check and why, and take away a fun Port Health goodie bag.

We look forward to seeing more of you tomorrow, so come and visit us at Stand 257 in the Farm4Future Zone!

Yesterday, we welcomed members of the Food Standards Agency (FSA) Board for an introduction to Port Health, led by our Lead Business Solutions Trainer, Adam Flatman and Technical Leads.

The introduction was followed by a tour of the Port of Felixstowe examination facility 70 Shed, where the team had the opportunity to shadow a live sample and the examination procedures on a consignment of rice from India. One of our Port Health Officers demonstrated how products are tested for aflatoxins, ochratoxins, and pesticide residues to help ensure food safety standards are met.

Thank you for visiting us, we hope you found the day both valuable and enjoyable.

Last month, our Port Health Team at Harwich worked with Border Force after illegal pork was found entering the UK from a country in Europe on two occasions. In total, nearly 300kg of illegal pork was seized after being hidden in foil and packed into suitcases via a courier service.

Strict biosecurity rules ban personal imports of meat and dairy from some EU countries to help prevent serious diseases like Foot and Mouth Disease and African Swine Fever. All seized products were safely handled and destroyed in line with regulations.

We were delighted to welcome Ian Andrews, Head of Environmental Health Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH), to Port Health today.

During his visit, Ian received a full briefing and toured our inspection facilities, getting first-hand insight into how we help protect public and animal health.

It was a great opportunity to discuss the wider Environmental Health profession, the training opportunities we provide, and our close work with local schools.

Thank you for visiting, Ian, we hope you found the day valuable and enjoyable.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us today for our first Stakeholder Forum of the year. It was great to see both familiar and new faces and to have such an engaging discussion on essential services and key technical updates.

We hope the insights shared helped answer your questions on the latest UK–EU SPS Agreement, as well as local government, technical and operational developments.

We were delighted to support the Felixstowe Seafarers Centre this year by donating 600 knitted hats and 48 Radox shower gels for their Christmas gift parcels.

The incredible work done by the Seafarers community ensures that the men and women working at sea receive the care, comfort, and connection they need most. We’re proud to play a small part in brightening their festive season.

This year, they’ve also received tremendous support from local people who have been knitting and donating items for the Christmas parcels. So far, an amazing 1,500 presents have been wrapped, with another 500 still to go. A big thank you to Roy Thomas for organising this wonderful effort.

Thank you to everyone involved in making this possible.
