Pilot Officer Martyn King was a member of 249 squadron stationed at Boscombe Down.
On the 16th August 1940..his section commanded by Flt Lt Nicolson was tasked to intercept hostile aircraft over the Solent..
His section got ' bounced' by enemy aircraft.
Flt Lt Nicolson's actions are well documented as he won his Victoria Cross during this action.
Martyn King bailed out of his burning Hurricane successfully...but as he parachuted to the ground... Nicolson and King received ground fire from the Local Defence force.. possibly causing King's parachute to collapse..
Flt Lt Nicolson survived his wounds..
Martyn King didn't.

It was discovered a couple of years ago that he was the youngest pilot to die during the Battle of Britain.
