Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve offers accessible footpaths and boardwalks for a view of the rare, unspoilt Hampshire landscape. Home to resident and migrating ducks, geese, wading birds and the rare Avocet, each of the seven hides provides a spectacular view of birds and other wildlife. There’s a charge to enter the reserve – please purchase your tickets from the ticketing point in reception.

Bee-autiful photo! Congratulations to Neil Braisher for this image being selected for the BBC Countryfile Calendar 2027. This stunning photo has been chosen for the month of July in the calendar and shows the moment a Sedge Warbler spotted a honeybee flying overhead (the bee wasn’t caught!).
Neil is a member of Titchfield Haven and took this photo from Spurgin Hide in May:
‘The Sedge Warbler was singing away just on the right-hand side of the hide. I was trying to catch the bird with its beak wide open and took about 40 images in short bursts. 8 images contained the bee but only one with the bee directly overhead. I was very lucky that the bee was in the same plane of focus as the bird. There were lots on insects around, but I didn’t see it catch anything.’

Thousands of photos are entered for this competition and so this is a fantastic achievement, and for a worthy cause as the BBC donate a percentage of the sales to Children in Need.

We have exciting news to share! Work on the Suffern Hide replacement will be starting on 19th October.

During this time, the Boardwalk Trail will be completely closed. The entire hide will need to be removed and brought back to the yard where it will be taken off site in skips. Access for large machinery is limited on this side of the reserve, especially with its location on the river, and so small plant will need to be going back and forth along the path. This will obviously have an impact on the pathway, which will then have to be repaired and made safe for visitors before re-opening.

The new hide will be smaller and lower than the previous hide. The previous hide had legs 2m tall which would be very expensive to replicate on the new hide. We are trying to make the funds we have available go as far as possible as we have other hides needing replacement.

The works are expected to be completed in December. We will keep you updated of progress along the way.

We are looking forward to having views onto the river again soon!

Today was an amazing day on the reserve due to both the weather and bird sightings! Highlights included 4 Marsh Harriers, 3 Red Kites, 3 Bearded T**s, Kingfisher, 14 Pintail, 2 Dartford Warblers, 6 Buzzards, around 100 Mediterranean Gulls on the South Scrape and many Clouded Yellow Butterflies hurtling about in search of a nectar source. A well watched Water Rail showed well at Meon Shore Hide at various intervals throughout the day and a Glossy Ibis gave incredible views right in front of Pumfrett Hide in the afternoon, until it was flushed by a low flying plane. Numbers of winter visitors like Snipe, Wigeon and Lapwing have noticeably increased too, the next few weeks should see more arriving.

Following one of the hottest and driest summers, 11 Acre Mere was completely dried out and choked with vegetation. We took this opportunity to do some vegetation clearance in front of Spurgin Hide. We think you will agree that the difference between these before and after photos is incredible! While we wait for a little bit vegetation to grow back, it will take a bit of time for the birds to return although on a site visit there today, the rangers saw a kingfisher land on one of the perches, a heron preening itself on one of the new islands and numerous stonechats flitting about! Dragonflies were also making the most of the autumn sunshine.
Thanks for your patience during these works, we hope you enjoy the improved views in front of the hides on the Scrapes trail.

We have had a few reports recently of drones being flown over the nature reserve. Please be aware that Titchfield Haven is a no-drone zone due to the disturbance that drones can cause to wildlife. Even when flown at a distance, drones can stress to birds, disrupt feeding and breeding behaviour, and may cause birds to leave nests or important resting areas.

To help protect the reserve and its wildlife, please do not fly drones anywhere over the site.

If you see a drone being flown over the reserve, please report it to the Ticket Office.

The beautiful blue flash of the Kingfisher is a regular sighting at the moment, seen in various places along the river and on the scrapes (thanks to Steve Payce for this action shot taken previously on the reserve).
We’ve also had good views of two Spoonbills today. At times they’ve been sweeping their large paddle-shaped bills from side to side across the water to feed. Then they tuck their long bills into their feathers and become snoozing statues! (Thanks to Lyn Wheeldon for this library photo).

On Friday evening we were joined by members of the intrepid Fareham Moth Group, to survey moths on the nature reserve. Mercury Vapour bulbs and actinic lamps were set on white sheets at various places along the boardwalk. Things started off fairly quietly, with not many moths on the wing... however the excitement began when a large moth was spotted on an oak tree near one of the lamps. After netting it and getting it into a plastic pot for a closer look, it turned out to be a Dark Crimson Underwing! This moth is a Red Data Book* species and was formerly only known from the New Forest, but it seems to have spread in recent years. This is the first record of this species at Titchfield Haven.

As if this wasn't exciting enough, a little later another large moth was seen flying around in the same area... we managed to catch it using a butterfly net. After a tense moment of trying to get the moth out of the net and into a pot, it was identified as a Rosy Underwing, an even rarer moth! There are very few records (we think just 6 or 7) of this species in Hampshire, the first was in 2022, and this is the first to be recorded in East Hampshire.

Both of these moths are fairly large (for moths) with wingspans of around 7-8cm. Quite amazing that two new species can be added to the nature reserve's species list in one evening!
