➡️ Fareham Borough Council responds to Government review of Local Government Reorganisation

Fareham Borough Council notes the Government's decision to withdraw its Local Government Reorganisation decision for Hampshire and undertake a further review of the programme following legal advice. The Council now awaits urgent clarification from Government on what this review means for Hampshire and the timetable for future decisions.

Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Simon Martin, said:

"I have consistently called for the Government to delay Local Government Reorganisation for at least 12 months to ensure that such a significant change to local services and local democracy is properly considered and based on sound evidence.

"Whilst it is right that the Government takes the necessary steps to ensure that its process is lawful and robust, today's announcement will inevitably create further uncertainty for residents, elected members and council staff.

"The Government initiated this process and required councils to commit substantial officer time and public money to developing detailed proposals. Today's decision raises legitimate questions about whether that effort and expenditure could have been avoided had Ministers taken more time to establish a clear and legally robust process from the outset.

"The stop-start nature of this process has created uncertainty and risks wasting both time and taxpayers' money. Councils need clarity on the way forward so they can focus on delivering high-quality services for their residents.

"We will await further details from Government and will continue to work constructively with our Hampshire partners to ensure that the interests of Fareham residents remain at the heart of any future decisions."

We're preparing a new Local Plan to help shape how the borough develops over the coming years, and we want to hear from you.

The new Local Plan will help ensure that homes, jobs, services, infrastructure and community facilities are delivered in the right places at the right time, while protecting Fareham's unique environment and character.

As part of this early stage, three consultations are now open:

✅ Local Plan Scoping Consultation
Help identify the issues, opportunities and priorities that matter most to local people.
✅ Draft Local Plan Engagement Strategy Consultation
Tell us how you'd like to be involved as the Local Plan is developed.
✅ Sustainability Appraisal Scoping Report
Share your views on the issues and information that should be considered when assessing future development options.

Easy, you think, looking around an art display. Wrong, easily one of the most difficult choices at Warsash Art & Craft Exhibition; a ‘Mayor’s Choice’ winner among art that truly blew us away with the multiple media, variety of subjects, perspectives and talent. All truly worthy, and wonderful to meet artists to hear about the process behind their art too. It also showed there is no barrier to art, so I’d urge anyone harbouring a desire to ‘give it a go’ with your local art group. A big thank you to organisers for their patience while we deliberated, we will definitely visit again.

29 August
Holly Hill Leisure Centre 10th Anniversary Open Day with cake cutting and a tour we really enjoyed talking to long term users and those who had never stepped foot in Holly Hill (well one was only three weeks old) or a gym before. There really is something there for everyone and it was tempting to just jump in that pool!

30 August
GAFIRS Golden Mile Swim, 90 braved the waves as despite a calmer start it really did get more challenging very quickly. This was the inaugural swim for this event, from The Bayside Cabin to GAFIRS Lifeboat House. GAFIRS ensuring there were plenty of safety kayak’s (including my consort Robert) and the small lifeboat alongside swimmers at all times. It got pretty brutal so hats off to all those who we gave medals to. Look out for registration to next year’s swim.
