It was a pleasure to welcome Royal Forestry Society - RFS to look around the Estate woodlands today, and share with them our strategies for bringing small woods into productive management with environmental, financial and social sustainability firmly in mind. Thanks to Working Woodlands Cornwall CIC for organising, sorry I couldn’t organise the weather better!

We’ve just completed the sixth coupe in our coppice rotation. Incredible to see the explosion of ground flora and influx of fauna amidst the regrowth on last winter’s cut.

Come along on 18th May for a chance to see how we manage the gardens and woods at the heart of the Estate. Includes demos from the Artificers Collective and other craftspeople. All proceeds go to Cornwall Heritage Trust.

Booking is now open for our Open Garden at the Trefusis Estate near Falmouth, which is set to take place on Saturday 18th May from 10.30am – 4pm.

New for 2024, this is an Open Garden with a difference offering visitors the chance to take a look behind the gates of a working estate which puts environmental sustainability at the heart of everything it does. The estate includes informal gardens, beautiful woods, lovely views, and the community-owned regenerative market garden, Soul Farm.

Free guided walks exploring the estate’s sustainable woodland management and coppicing will be available at 11.30am and 2pm. These can be signed up to on the day and places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

A variety of traditional and heritage craftspeople will also be demonstrating their work throughout the day. These include printmaker Lou Tonkin, who is our current artist in residence; artist and blacksmith Lisa Wisdom Artist; woodturner Jamie Lovekin; basketmaker Lin Lovekin; and pole lathe woodturner Joseph Huggett.

Ticket prices are £6 if pre-booked online and £7.50 on the door. Under 12s go free and do not require booking. Online booking will close at 12noon on the Friday before the event.

Last entry will be one hour before closing time.

We’re excited to announce that we’re opening the gardens at Trefusis on 18th May in aid of The Cornwall Heritage Trust. Look out for further updates on the talks and demonstrations we’ll be hosting. Now if it would just stop raining for long enough for us to tidy up!

Four of Cornwall's historic gardens are kindly throwing open their gates to help raise vital funds for Cornwall Heritage Trust. Visit a garden to enjoy a wonderful day out and support our work. The gardens kindly opening their gates are Boconnoc near Lostwithiel on 7th April, Trevince near Gwennap on 12 May, the Trefusis Estate near Flushing on 18th May, and Trenarth near Constantine on 23rd June.

Bit of experimentation in the area of shelter belt that we planted last winter. Multiple yields from the same area of land, utilising the ground disturbance and added fertility from the pigs, managing the w**d burden around the young trees. Not many bowls of porridge in that, but a little something for the piggies for their hard work.

Really exciting to be welcoming two respected authorities on commercial agroecological market gardening and composting to Trefusis in September. This will be an in-depth and intensive couple of days, but an opportunity not to be missed for serious growers! Tickets are selling out fast, so get in there quickly!

At time of posting we have 9 tickets left for the course. We also have Michael from .club doing a session on composting. Other sessions include how to assemble and build a low tunnel JM style and how to sell produce online form - link in profile for tickets.
