🌱 Volunteer Planting Session at Mawnan Park 🌱

Join us from 3.30pm on Thursday 21 May to help plant up the newly prepared sensory garden beds at Mawnan Park, next to the bowling club.

This is a great opportunity for the community to come together, improve the park, support local wildlife, and help create a beautiful sensory space for everyone to enjoy.

All ages are welcome, and children should be accompanied by an adult.

A huge thank you to the volunteers who have already been busy preparing the beds ready for planting.

The plants and compost have been funded through the Mawnan Park Nature Garden crowdfunder and part-funded by Cornwall Council’s Cornwall Climate and Nature Fund.

If you’d like to get involved in future planting days or wildlife projects, please contact Shiona on 07792 758640 or [email protected].

Don’t worry, we haven’t had any vandals in the park (though a deer may have had a nibble at one of the saplings!).

Under Simon’s guidance from The Forest Garden Falmouth, the children and I have been out removing some of the flowers from the fruit trees and bushes. This helps the plants put all their energy into developing strong roots so they can get properly established.

I’m hoping we’ll be allowed to enjoy the fruit next year… patience is definitely something I’m working on! 🌱🍎

If you would like to help care for the park and get involved in future planting and gardening days, or if you notice any issues with the trees and plants, please do get in touch with me at [email protected]

The trees have been funded by Forest for Cornwall and the Mawnan Park Nature Garden project is part-funded by Cornwall Council's Cornwall Climate and Nature Fund.

The playing field will be closed on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 March while improvement works take place. 🚧

This includes the installation of new fencing and gates to create a permitted dog walkers’ path and to enclose the new nature garden area. The project has been match-funded by Cornwall Council’s Cornwall Climate and Nature Fund: https://letstalk.cornwall.gov.uk/climate-and-nature-fund.

For everyone’s safety, and to allow the concrete for the gates and fencing to set properly, please do not enter the site and follow all signage and barriers.

We know this route is regularly used by dog walkers and families on the school run, so please plan a safe alternative route through the village during this time.

Public footpath 220/16/1, which runs outside the playing field and behind Abbeyfield from Grove Hill to Carwinion Road, will remain open.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Last Tuesday marked a fantastic start to the tree planting element, an important part of Phase One of the Mawnan Park project. A huge thank you to the 16 adults and 24 children from Mawnan School who helped plant trees and native hedging along the field boundaries. You all did an amazing job and achieved so much!

It was also wonderful to be joined by our funders, Alex Forrester from Forest for Cornwall and James Ruddick from the Cornwall Climate and Nature Fund, who helped lead the planting and got everyone involved.

And a big thank you to Shiona’s mum, Julia, who kept all our volunteers well fed and watered throughout the session.

Our second tree planting session with Simon Miles, The Forest Garden Falmouth has now been rescheduled to Friday 13 March. This is due to a delay in installing the new fencing and gates for the dog walkers’ path and nature garden, which need to be completed first.

If you are able to lend a hand on 13 March, we would love your help planting fruit trees and creating a new foraging hedge. Please message Shiona if you would like to be kept informed at [email protected] or 07792 758640. If the weather is poor, we will reschedule again.

If you can join us, even for an hour, we would love to see you there! 🌱

The tree planting sessions are completely free - the trees have been funded by Forest for Cornwall and the Mawnan Park Nature Garden project is part-funded by Cornwall Council's Cornwall Climate and Nature Fund.

🌳 Yay… whisper it quietly, but the forecast is looking hopeful and the sun might even make an appearance for our first community tree planting day! 🌤

A quick reminder that we are planting trees on the playing field tomorrow and everyone is very welcome to come along and help.

🕙 Start time: 10am
Alex Forrester from Forest for Cornwall will give a short briefing before we begin. You are welcome to stay for as much or as little time as you can spare. We plan to finish at around 4pm.

📍 Location: Mawnan Park (formerly known as Mawnan Junior Playing Field), Carwinion Road TR11 5JD
What3Words: ///steepest.pesky.police
Parking is available at the Bowling Club car park (please stay on the hard standing). We will have access to the Bowling Club toilets throughout the day.

👕 What to wear:
Please dress for the weather in practical outdoor clothing. Sturdy footwear such as boots or wellies is essential, as it may still be muddy underfoot. Gloves are recommended.

🛠 What to bring:
Spades will be available, but do bring your own if you have one, ideally named. Wheelbarrows and shovels for moving mulch would also be hugely appreciated.
Please also bring a reusable coffee cup or flask if you can.

☕ Refreshments:
There will be hot drinks, biscuits and cakes available during the day, plus bread rolls and hot leek and sweet potato soup at lunchtime. You are welcome to bring a packed lunch or pop home if you prefer.

It is fantastic to see our community coming together to help with Phase One of this important project. If you can join us, even for an hour, we would love to see you there 🌱

The sessions are completely free - the trees have been funded by
Forest for Cornwall and the Mawnan Park Nature Garden project is also part-funded by Cornwall Council's Cornwall Climate and Nature Fund.

Out with the old to make way for the new!

It’s sad to see the old zip wire go, which has served the village well for over 20 years, but we’re excited for what’s to come. A new zip wire is planned for the future, and fundraising and grant applications are underway to secure more play equipment. The crowdfunder is still live and gratefully accepting donations: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/mawnan-park-nature-garden

Temporary closure: Mawnan Park will be closed Friday 16 January, and possibly Saturday 17 January for removal works. Please plan an alternative route and follow all signage and barriers.

Thank you! 🙏

Update: Sam and Tim did a great job and completed all works to the playing field on Friday, so it's fully open again on Saturday 17 January.

Temporary closure of Mawnan Park (AKA Mawnan Park)

The playing field will be closed on Friday 16 January, and possibly Saturday 17 January, while improvement works take place, including the removal of the zip wire, which is over 20 years old.

For everyone’s safety, please do not enter the site and follow all signage and barriers. We know this route is regularly used by dog walkers and school families, so please plan a safe alternative route through the village whilst these works are taking place. The public footpath ( #220/16/1) that runs outside the playing field and behind Abbeyfield from Grove Hill to Carwinion Road will remain open.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

👉Please be reassured that a new zip wire is planned and the Parish Council is working very hard to secure funding for additional play equipment. Our crowdfunder is still open and gratefully accepting donations.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas, and wishing you all a happy and healthy 2026 🎄✨

We’re absolutely delighted by the incredible support for our Mawnan Park Nature Garden fundraiser, which smashed our £10,000 target and secured the Cornwall Council Climate and Nature Fund and Community Chest grants. Thank you so much to everyone who donated, shared and cheered us on.

Thanks to your support, here’s what’s planned for 2026:

🌿 January
Removal of the broken old zip wire.

🌿 February
Installation of new fencing, including space for the new nature garden, plus hedge planting with Forest for Cornwall and children from Mawnan School.

🌿 March
More tree planting, including fruit trees and a foraging hedge with Simon Miles of The Forest Garden Falmouth

🛝 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️ Installation of a brand new zip wire is planned for the future whilst we continue to raise much needed funds for new play equipment! Thank you Mawnan Parish Council!

🌱 Get involved
We’ll be needing volunteers to help with the tree planting, so please get in touch with Shiona on 07792 758640 if you’d like to lend a hand.

We’ll also be applying for some larger funding pots early in the year and have set aside funds for match funding. The more we raise, the more we can do, so our crowdfunder page is still open and accepting donations towards new play equipment. https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/mawnan-park-nature-garden

Later in the year we’ll be hosting our first BioBlitz event, bringing people of all ages together to explore and record the wildlife in the park. Keep your eyes peeled for dates, TBC 👀

Thank you again for helping us create a greener, more welcoming space for the whole community 🌳💚

PS. Apologies for the AI-generated image – the park isn’t very inspiring at the moment, but with all the improvements planned over the coming months, we hope to have some much better real photos soon!
