A rare glimpse into wetland family life πŸ¦πŸ’š

One of the joys of running camera traps is that you never quite know what they're going to capture. Often when you're setting ups a trap with a species in mind, you'll get something completely unexpected!

While this particular camera was set up to monitor our resident beavers, it instead treated us to a wonderful sighting of a Water Rail family making their way through the wetlands.

Water Rails are one of our most secretive birds, preferring to slip through dense reeds and vegetation rather than venture into the open. They're often heard before they're seen, making encounters like this incredibly special.

To capture not just one Water Rail, but a parent leading its youngsters through the marsh, offers a rare glimpse into a part of wetland life that most people never get to witness.

Of course, the beavers haven't been completely camera shy either... πŸ‘€πŸ¦«

In fact, these cameras have been recording some truly exciting moments recently, and we can't wait to share more with you very soon.

A huge new chapter for wetlands at Pensthorpe 🌿

We’re excited to officially unveil plans for the Wetland Ambassador Project, an ambitious new vision to transform our crane and flamingo areas into one of the UK’s most immersive, accessible and welfare-led wetland wildlife experiences.

This almost Β£400,000 redevelopment, led by our charity Pensthorpe Conservation Trust, will include:

🦩 Significantly expanded crane enclosures
🦩 New flamingo welfare and winter facilities
🌿 Immersive wetland boardwalks and viewing routes
πŸ‘€ A spectacular new 360-degree crane hide
πŸ“š Enhanced education and interpretation spaces
β™Ώ Improved accessibility throughout the area
πŸ’§ Enhanced landscaping and wetland-style planting

Wetlands support around 40% of the world’s species, yet remain among the most threatened ecosystems on Earth.

This project is about much more than enclosure redevelopment. It’s about helping future generations connect more deeply with wetlands, wildlife and conservation through a more immersive and inspiring experience.

The project has already secured Β£160,000 towards its target, including support from Alan Boswell Group trust and a Β£150,000 commitment from the Pensthorpe Conservation Trust.

We are now launching a fundraising campaign to help realise the wider long-term vision shown within the CGI concepts.

We’re now inviting individuals, businesses and supporters to help shape the next chapter of this nationally significant project.

Every donation and partnership will help bring more of the vision to life.

Find out more and support the project:

Please note: CGI visuals shown represent the wider long-term vision for the project, with additional fundraising helping bring more of the vision to life.

⚽ The Pensthorpe squad has been putting in the hard yards ahead of England's World Cup opener...

Unfortunately, we've learned that watching football and playing football are two very different things. πŸ˜…

Good luck to England football team as they take on Croatia tonight. We'll be cheering them on from Norfolk! 🦁⚽

This week, we're shining the spotlight on one of the Wader Aviary's noisiest residents – the Redshank.

While they may not be the largest birds in the aviary, Redshanks certainly make up for it with personality. Proud, alert and never afraid to make themselves known, they're often among the first birds to sound the alarm when something catches their attention.

And what an alarm it is! πŸ””

Their distinctive ringing call has earned them a bit of a reputation amongst birdwatchers, with many comparing it to a car alarm echoing across a marsh. Once you've heard a Redshank calling, it's a sound you're unlikely to forget. πŸš—πŸ“’

They're often referred to as the "sentinels of the marsh", thanks to their habit of keeping watch and loudly alerting everything else when they spot a potential threat.

Of course, Redshanks are also famous for their brightly coloured legs. In fact, you may find yourself asking the same question we did: why are they called Redshanks when their legs look more orange than red? Whatever colour you call them, those eye-catching "shanks" make this species one of the easiest waders to identify.

Next time you're in the Wader Aviary, see if you can spot one before you hear it... although we wouldn't bet on it! πŸ‘€πŸͺΆπŸŒΏ

πŸŽ…βœ¨ YOUR OWN SANTA MOMENT βœ¨πŸŽ…

We wanted to make those magical Christmas moments even more special, creating an experience that feels personal, memorable and completely unique to your family.

That's why in addition to the free flowing festive village, and the build-your-own teddy experience, every family will enjoy their own dedicated visit with Santa as part of their North Norfolk Pole adventure.

With your own pre-booked Santa time, little ones can share their Christmas wishes, families can enjoy a truly personal encounter, and everyone can experience a magical moment together.

No rushing.
No large group meet-and-greets.

πŸ¦©πŸ“ We Have a Winner! πŸ“πŸ¦©

After an incredible response to our flamingo chick naming vote, we're delighted to reveal that our fluffy new arrival will officially be known as...

✨ Strawberry ✨

A huge thank you to everyone who submitted suggestions and cast their votes. We received so many wonderful name ideas, but Strawberry proved to be the most popular of our final three finalists!

A special shout-out goes to Bobby, aged 10, who originally suggested the winning name. Well done, Bobby! πŸŽ‰πŸ“

Our first flamingo chick of the season is growing quickly and becoming more confident every day. If you're visiting Pensthorpe over the coming weeks, keep an eye out for Strawberry waddling around the flock alongside its parents.

Congratulations, Bobby, and welcome to the world, Strawberry! πŸ“β€οΈ
